6.5 CM vs 7MM-08 head to head ...

If someone is going to compare something to a 6.5 Creedmoor. it should have been a 260 Remington. It is a 6.5 / 08 And is the closest thing to a 6.5 CM. In fact it is very close to the CMs ballistic and equal with only a very slight edge. (Not enough to make any real difference).

There is really no deference in there performance and only the name is different.

To compare a 7/08 to the 6.5 CM Isn't a good comparison because of bullet diameter difference .

I agree, but when shopping for rifles and cartridges that fall in that particular class, the 7mm08 and 6.5 creed seem to be the most compared. A buddy and I both went through this process a couple years ago when we were looking for a good round for our kids - sent each other a bunch of articles back and forth etc. i ended up getting my son the creed, he ended up going with the 7mm08. Neither of is have had any regrets and both of us are happy with out picks. Very few rifles manufactured in 260 anymore - lots in both 6.5 creed and 7mm08 - we can thank remington for screwing up the 260

Agreed, But the 7 Rem Mag drives the 162 grainer, at 200+ MORE, feet per second than, the 7mm-08 can ! It was, "marginally stable" for my son, thus the random Flyers.
His barrel is 22.4" long,.. your's 26" and more Powder, to boot !
Very true. I was thinking it being a 9 twist that would make up the velocity. I'm driving them well over 3100 fps in my 26in

@Creedmoor shooter
I had, a 26" Rem model 700 and it shot very well, a good Cartridge for most "Hunter's".
I was shooting, the Hornady 154 grain InterBond's at, 3,100 FPS and it was accurate !
I shaved off, a Pound with, the T3 Tikka and 2" off the barrel, it was my "excuse" for trying, a New Rifle, LOL ! To answer your question about, the 162 grain ELD-X in 7mm-08, I doubt that 2,800 FPS is "doable" without serious, "Pressure" !
He was able to get, 2,850 FPS with, 44.5 grains of RL-17 w/ the 150's ( top pressure, in HIS Rifle at, 40* -50* Temp's ). Trust me, IF my son could have got good/ repeatable group's,.. he'd be a shootin' it !

Agreed! But series of head to head articles are not necessarily same caliber/bullet diameter, I supposed that's an author's prerogative or what they are getting paid to write ...

This article is what got me to thinking about the 7mm-08 A.I., I have no use at this point for the Creede unless it's to make my wife happy. The two hunting shows she watches have women shooting them, I think the kool Aid has been drank, I hope not:rolleyes:

Click on the 7mm-08 A.I., he talks about barrel length a bit. There is a more in-depth article I had read but can't seem to locate it. I just wish I would have went with a 7.5 or 8 twist instead of 9. I didn't know about Hammer Bullets then, so I will have to stick with the 143 gr.:D

I have a 22-250 that needs a new barrel and have been wanting to convert it to the creed or 7mm-08 for several years now. No matter how many articles I read, I just can decide which one to choose. From what I hear, you can't really go wrong with either one.
Base your decision on which barrel you find first; as far as I am concerned, they are effectively equals. With a good bullet and proper placement they will both put elk on the ground without issue. I have shot 7mm-08 for a number of years, and the best bullet weight I found, at least in the stock Remington 700, was the 150 gr. My dad really likes his RAP in 6.5 Creed, and we both have put elk down with them.

Guess I'm not familiar with the 7mm-08. I thought 2800 would be doable. Maybe in a 26in?

I ran the 150 gr ABLR at 2750 in my 24" 7mm-08; the 140 gr ABs were pushing 2825. If you have the ability to load them long, they would be able to go faster; I had to keep them in my ADL mag box so I was limited to 2.825" COAL.

Split the difference and build a 260:)

That was my point. if we are going to compare one cartridge to another, It should be the same caliber, the same case capacity, the same SAMMI pressures and the same barrel length. If any of these parameters are different, then it is not a fair comparison. under certain conditions a lessor cartridge can be made to out perform a cartridge with more potential.

As you know, a well designed cartridge will out perform a poorly designed one because of efficiency with everything else being equal.

I have first hand experience with this because the 260 Rem with the same bullet, pressure and barrel length is almost identical to the 6.5 CM. The 260 AI can add more that 100 ft/sec to the 260 with little or no additional powder. The 260 AI is very close to the same performance as a 7/08 . and the 7/08 AI adds 100+ ft/sec to the 7/08/ all very small changes in case design and capacity. your SST's are a case in point.

The point is, any change to any comparable cartridge renders it a poor comparison in my opinion. I personally don't like most comparisons because they can be skewed to make one cartridge look better than the other even though they are equal.

I don't try to justify any cartridge by down rating another. I want what's best for me, in it,s intended use no mater what it is called. It is very hard to come up with a fair comparison of almost anything because the nature of something with a different name means that it is not the same.

Be happy with what you have and enjoy.

How fast can a 7-08ai drive a 180?
If varget is the powder for 308
And h4350 the powder for 6.5,
What's the ideal powder or burn rate of powders for the 7mm-08?
