Elk can be a different story than deer. You can and will put them down with a 6.5, I do it myself, and in the case of the o.p. I honestly wouldn't build a different rifle, I would just use the creed. But a heavier, larger diameter bullet WILL do it better. If you don't believe me, ask Jeff Brozovich. He has put down/seen more elk put down than 99% of us will in our lifetimes (well over 100), and he will attest to the 30's and 338's for elk.
