300 wsm 166 or 181 hammer hunter

I have a suppressed, 21" 300WSM running 208eldM @ 2750fps for long range hunting

At 2300' above SL, It stays above 1800fps impact velocity until 820yd
In Colorado around 8-9000' above SL it stays above 1800fps impact velocity until 1050yds

Its got a dozen WT deer and few bulls under its belt now and I like the short barrel

May I ask what powder you're running?

So don't know nothing about nothing, but here is my observations with the 181s.

They have been the hardest to develop a load in multiple rifles and multiple cartridges. They shoot acceptable, but they do not seem to shoot as well as all the other Hammers I have shot. Take that for what it is worth.

Tried them in 308 Win, (2) 300 WM, 300 RUM. Still working them in the RUM, but if it were me and a shortmag, the 150 or less would probably be where I would look. Probably the 137 first.

I also didn't do well with the 124 in a 308 Win or 300 WM FWIW. Only did one box, but didn't see the potential as I did with the others.

What twist were the barrels you fired them through ?

300 Ultra 8
300 WM #1 8
300 WM#2 10. This one shot fine, good round holes and I am sea level, but just not a tight as would like.
308 Win 10.25. Only found that out because the 181s were sideways, so I guess those don't count.

These were all tested prior to the change from Hammer on the twist rate.

Built 300 wsm on tikka 1/9 twist 3.155 coal 181 hh with sta ball 6.5 rel17 and rel 26 all shot .5 at 100-200 started opening up 300 .7 at 500 really opened up 1.2-1.3 next primer change. long action gained no real speed fps. 17 seemed fastest at 3030 26 2980 sta 6.5 3030 if primers and or seating dont help this done already over 100 bullet down barrel was a new bartlein we,ll what happens pretty discouraged
Are your group numbers in inches or MOA?

Bud that's right on the money I don't know hat your discouraged about

Having a 300 wsm built 9 twist. Will be a lighter weight hunting riffle 6-6 1/2 lbs bare rifle Elk/deer do all
Thinking I might go 22" plus break. Is the 2 inches worth it for 800 yds to go 24"

Which bullet do you recommend? Have plenty of powder options. Currently shoot 166 hh out of a 26" rem 700 short action at magazine length

Looking at a medium long action. For those that have done it. What is your OAL length with 181? Does a reamer for 215 bergers work well?

Thanks Brian
If you must go with a HH I recommend the 166 to save case capacity, although I didn't have much luck getting accuracy, velocity, and long range energy with any HH in my 300 WSM. I strongly recommend giving the Hornady 212 grain ELD-x a try with super performance powder. Load development was super easy and way accurate. Excellent down range energy as well. I killed a caribou at 425 yards and a Dall sheep at 500 yards. Both shots were great. Accuracy and terminal ballistics were quite good.

That is unfortunate, but every barrel is different. In fact, I found these to be the easiest projectiles to load for in a couple of different rifles. And, accuracy, speed and all other ideals were there too. This shows us that it isn't for every situation and you have to "listen" what your barrel tells you.
