300 wsm 166 or 181 hammer hunter

Having a 300 wsm built 9 twist. Will be a lighter weight hunting riffle 6-6 1/2 lbs bare rifle Elk/deer do all
Thinking I might go 22" plus break. Is the 2 inches worth it for 800 yds to go 24"

Which bullet do you recommend? Have plenty of powder options. Currently shoot 166 hh out of a 26" rem 700 short action at magazine length

Looking at a medium long action. For those that have done it. What is your OAL length with 181? Does a reamer for 215 bergers work well?

I just had a 300 wsm chopped down from 24 to 21 inches and threaded for a can. Was surprised to only see a 40fps drop in velocity. That was with hornady precision hunters, I won the rifle and 5 boxes of ammo at a RMEF banquet so havnt handloaded for it yet. Best I remember it was 2720 ish with the 200 grain bullets. Not bad.

I run the 166 but the 174g worked in. 1:10 twist but the 166 was a bit better with the light rifle

The lighter and faster crowd is growing. My 7RM pushes the 143HH at 3310 with nice terminal. My 280AI is at 3320 with the 131HH as I develop it. Hammer might just find a new bullet design that goes to another level. I will always take a look at the next level and test.

You mention out to 800, so run your ballistic solvers to make sure the starting velocities get you where you want to be @800.

Hammer is working a new line of tipped bullets with improved BC, so it may be worth waiting until they come out (hopefully sometime soon!).

Also, as a general note, higher stability factors seem to assist consistent terminal performance. To that end the 166 out of a 9 twist will be pushing 2+ SG which is a good thing.

Yep, The 137 would be my choice if the minimum fps is met @ distance

@klejeski, what length action will you be using? The nose of the 181 HH is long. I was considering a 300 WSM to use 181 HHs myself but I think I would need to use either a Tikka or a mid-length action.

I run the 166HH at 3200 with RL17. Topped out close to 3300. Accurate! The 124 is screamer but I haven't finished off load.

Should have mentioned 26" 1:10tw. I also had Preferred Barrel short throated the barrel since it was on 700SA which has poor COAL magazine length. I need to finish off the 124HH load since it will be laser.

Built 300 wsm on tikka 1/9 twist 3.155 coal 181 hh with sta ball 6.5 rel17 and rel 26 all shot .5 at 100-200 started opening up 300 .7 at 500 really opened up 1.2-1.3 next primer change. long action gained no real speed fps. 17 seemed fastest at 3030 26 2980 sta 6.5 3030 if primers and or seating dont help this done already over 100 bullet down barrel was a new bartlein we,ll what happens pretty discouraged
