I'm building my 300 PRC with the Hawkins CIP length. Being a southpaw I'm in a holding pattern at the mercy of Graybow for my stock.Be careful with that bottom metal on a high recoil rifle. Some will open up under recoil. I have had to change a few out to Hawkins or non oberndorf styles to prevent it.
Would you be willing to share your neck and throat dimensions on your 30 28 Nosler? I'd also like to know your COAL with the Berger 215s.I threw together a 30-28 nosler for myself. Figured with the several hundred 28 noslers Ive made for customers that they will want something a little more barrel friendly when the barrels shot out. I put a proof carbon barrel on it. Kelbly atlas action and a manners eh1. I only use Kahles scopes. I did a ladder test and saw where it wanted to be shot. First group after the ladder test had .162" vertical at 400 yds, .038 moa vertical. First two shots went in the same hole. Third one the wind moved over 1" to the left. I figured that would work for a load. H1000 with a 215 berger at 3075 fps and ADG brass. Primer pockets were super tight after that load. Anything over 3100 started to exhibit some pressure signs. I know I could hit 3150+ fps easily with Reloader 33 or n570. A couple weeks later I took it to 950 yds. First shot hit the left side of the steel. I made a windage correction and shot a 3 shot group that measured 1.5" @ 950 yds. I thought maybe it was a fluke. I shot another 3 shot group. The first two were in the same splotch on the steel target. The wind moved the 3rd one to the right 3". Id just shot 7 shots with under 3" of vertical at 950 yds off the bipod. It was definitely one of the easiest cartridges to find the load for that I have seen. Same load has shot awesome in the last couple 30-28 noslers I test fired for customers.
Why don't you look into a 300 Weatherby, it will do everything that these others will do without "building" anything. You will have to load for it to obtain a sub MOA but you will for the others also. They come with first class barrels and out of the box ergo furniture. I cant touch one of them for what a build costs and if I get hard up for ammo I can buy it off the shelf.I would like some thoughts of The Forum on this. I'm getting ready to do a new 30 caliber Magnum rifle build. I was looking at a 30 Nosler , 30- 28 Nosler Wildcat , the 300 PRC and the 300 PRC Sherman improved . Because I thought none of them could reach the 3150 feet per second I was looking for out of 212 - 215 grain bullets, I jumped up to the 300 Remington Ultra Mag an ordered a long throated Reimer from PTG. Looking closer at the 300 PRC Sherman improved load data shows velocities of 3190 and 3200 + fps that seems to beat the 30 - 28 Nosler and rival the 300 Remington Ultra Mag. What are your guys's thoughts . Please help me understand if I'm wrong on this. I'd like a healthy discussion on this as once I build a rifle, I'll be stuck with that cartridge until I sell it or wear out the barrel. The build is on a Remington 700 action with a 28 in proof research carbon fiber Barrel I believe the twist rate is 1 + 9 or could be one an 8.5 I'll have to look.
If your interested p.m. me I'll share mine.Would you be willing to share your neck and throat dimensions on your 30 28 Nosler? I'd also like to know your COAL with the Berger 215s.
I love the 300 Weatherby Magnum. There's just something about that double radiused shoulder that is nostalgic and you just know it's going to perform. However all the manuals I've seen show it at just over 3000 feet per second with 210 plus grain bullets. Doesn't reach my goal launching those heavy pills at 3150. Perhaps there's new loading data with new powders that perform better. If so I'd like to know about it.Why don't you look into a 300 Weatherby, it will do everything that these others will do without "building" anything. The 300 Weatherby has the exact same capacity as the smaller capacity 30 noslers with one big problem. If you load the 215 to utilize that capacity in the Weatherby you will have to single feed in all but the single stack Wyatts boxes which are a pain. The 30 Nosler has more capacity with ADG brass and a shorter OAL length with a 215 or 230 for that matter seated where it should be. In my personal opinion the other cartridges have their place but the 30 nosler made the 300 Weatherby OBSOLETE for the reasons I mentioned. Why don't you look into a 300 Weatherby, it will do everything that these others will do without "building" anything.
