300 Norma vs 22 Dasher

Wud U B comfortable w/sending me ur 220 Swift loading data ??? I have my own Custom 220 Swift AI (Pierce T Action, etc.) so I'm interested in what you have developed !!

These are the combined Technology bullets with Lubalox. My friend wanted to look at my bore with a Hawkeye scope. He thought my bore would be shot out. He was shocked, he said it looks like I have a couple hundred rounds through it. I have about 2500 rounds through it. Including 4 prairie dog trips. It is a Schneider barrel that came from the winchester factory in 1994 on the HBV. It shoots as good today as it did back then.

I went with H-380 because that was the best group at the time, I see H414 was actually a little faster and 4 shots were great. It seems to like .005" off the lands, but anything from .005 to .015 always seems to work. I always start at .010 and go down to .015 and then back up for ***** & Giggles. My friend loods INTO the lands. I don't like that for practical reasons; don't want to risk pulling a bullet and dumping powder in my action- not worth it. Also get really high pressure without the benefit of velocity (IMHO).

BTW, that's my swift in the Avatar. Also, the 4400 fps...that was with the Federal FACTORY ammo!!! $19 per box for swift ammo!!! From Vizards

I personally think a 270 wsm with reloader 26 and a 170 Berger EOL would be the golden ticket to fill that gap. That combo would easily get into the 3000 fps range and that bullet has a .7++ BC. Benchmark makes a .277 1:8 twist barrel which would be perfect. I personally plan on building one for a lone peak medium action. I like this cartridge because it's not the typical milk toast 6.5 cal and it's a little closer to a big magnum than any 6.5 and ballistically it would be an incredible load. Also, it's the perfect mid range hunting cartridge that would work great from anything like totes all the way up to moose. Good luck!

I like to look at impartial reloading data as well, Like the Lyman and Lee Books. Lee has 40 grain bullets listed at 4477 fps for AA2520 and 4414 fps with AA 2700. The 2700 is a compressed load. XMR is 4409 fps . What I would do is try Accurate 2520 and back off. You are likely to get great results just under max and still be screaming, probably over 4350 fps. What more could you ask for? Nearly a flat laser out to 500 yards. At these speeds the 40 grain kicks *** over the 55's it gets there faster and has less time for YOUR inconsistency and for wind to act on it. "Speed kills" (when it is significant). I don't know what the Jaybird can do!!!
People say, "you'll burn out your barrel", So what. You shoot less ammo guessing for holdover. Barrels are cheaper than rifles. Look at the ballistics. Sight in for a 300 yard zero! It's insane. You don't buy a Ferrari to drive 55mph.
The .204 Ruger is another Gem I think people underrate. It is so efficient out to 400 or 500 yards.

Why not a 264 win mag ?
I like the 264 mag. If you reload its fine. I wanted ammo I could get anywhere so chose the 300. Way easier and cheaper to get Brass. The .30 cal 195's and 215's hit harder if target impact is what you want. Recoil just doesn't matter with a great brake though the 264 would be that much less. The .264 is awesome, just less choices in guns, bullets and brass availability. Compare ballistics of a hot 264 win mag to the 300. Not much difference overall. 300 is just easier to deal with. You can do a Rem RUM for that matter. I got a brand new Rem 300 5R Long Range with a 26" bbl for $400!!! put in a Calvin elite Timney trigger at 1.25# and had a tactical bolt knob installed. It shoots 3/4" groups with factory ammo. So far.
I just put on a Sun Optics 6-24 x50mm FFP scope in Burris *** align rings with 20 degree offset inserts. Haven't shot this setup yet. This weekend.

I will throw in a vote for the 6.5 WSM, have built a few in short actions, getting 3210 with 140 bergers and RL26, would do even better in a long action with a longer throat. Have heard a lot of good things about the shermans also. But I have way too much of the WSM brass to switch now

If it's a 'middle' calibre, try this formula - (.224 + .308)/2 = .266.
.266-.002= .264/6.5
Seems to me to be a fairly happy medium.
Being an 'old fart', I like military cartridges, so my choice would be 6.5x55 in a modern medium/long action, tight twist and long (26"++++) barrel.
Lapua/Norma, amongst others, make excellent brass for it, and with modern powders/pressures, will not be disgraced by anything more recently marketed.
If Berger doesn't drop the ball, their 'yet to see the light of day' bullet, Sierra or one of the smaller bullet makers may have something in their range to satisfy big beastie harvesting, or long range targets.
Else a 284/7mm option on easy to find brass - heaps of choices from small case to big case - you choose.

45-90.............OH, you didn't mean for the 300 Norma to be the MIDDLE cartridge? ;)

I'll admit I'm looking pretty hard at the 6.5 PRC. I like the 6.5 cal and the Creedmoor just doesn't have the oomph I would want for those bullets. That said, I did pick up a 6mm Creedmoor RPR and absolutely love it but it's for range shooting in production benchrest matches and trying to make small groups at long ranges.
I'm getting just under 3000 fps out of Creedmoor with 140 Bergers, RL26, and no pressure signs. Extremely accurate and consistent.

Alright guys let's put a cap on this thread! I can't afford all this advice. My wife is going to take my cards again!

I learned along time ago to NEVER a$k thi$ type of que$tion to thi$ forum for the $ame rea$on you're $tating.

Having said that, my wife of 36 years stopped asking why I do what I do along time ago. :D

If you only want to use Lapua brass, And want something in the 6.5 or 7mm The 260 Remington or the 7/08 are both standard cartridges and Lapua makes brass for both. If you want something with a 40o shoulder, then An AI version of ether is easy and you can still shoot factory loaded ammo in ether with great accuracy while fire forming to the AI.

I like the cases to have the proper head stamp and i also like Lapua brass so I am happy with these cartridges and have both versions in standard chambers and the AI versions. The Lapua has a great Anneal and fire forms perfect every time.

I would think ether would be a perfect fit for your wants and needs.

Just my opinion
