270 win build

That's all relative and a matter of personal preference ; see #5.

Practicality comes into play too and a 30" barrel on a 270 Win/AI isn't needed. Especially depending on the contour he ordered that could be a lot of weight hanging of a Rem 700 action. 26" would suit his needs just fine and would never even notice any performance loses.

Sorry but that too is a personal preference best determined by the OP as he gains personal experience. As previously noted (#11), if the OP changes his mind later, he can always cut it down shorter, but not the other way around. Furthermore, the OP already made a final decision.

I have a #6 contour (4.46 lbs + 2" muzzle brake) on a Savage 110 LA in my .270 AI and a friend has a #7 contour (5.07 lbs) on a Remington 700 LA in his 270 Win.

I understand the statements everyone has made and appreciate them. As I said in the beginning, this is my first build. I can always cut my barrel down. Yeah its gonna be heavy but I'm staying as close to f-class as I can. I don't intend on it being a carry rifle at all. Heck, I may even chop up a dolly and add some straps to it so I don't have to tote it. This twist, I went 1-8, every bullet I plan to shoot (for the most part) recommends 1-9 at MINIMUM. I'm at sea level basically, so why risk it? Either way I'm pretty happy with the way its headed. So far I don't think I have made any mistakes that can't be cut off or out of the finished product.

Yes he can cut it down later, I just like doing stuff right the first time and not have to fix mistakes later on.

If he was running 90+ grains of powder and not 50-60 then I'd say go with the 30" barrel.

Ok, I didn't realize this gun wasn't going to be carried at all and more of a bench/range gun. I was thinking a hunting rifle, stick a 30" on her and rock on!

Yeah I have an A bolt 25-06 I will Ackley improve in a year just whenever I come across the few parts I want. It has been my carry rifle for a year or so. I am building the 270 just because I want to see what I can do with it. I plan on taking some game with it, from a back porch or barn loft. Not to many mountains and valleys in Mississippi.

There's no mistake to fix.

Not our go-to rifles and not as often but my friend and I carry ours hunting under the wide open space of the Big Sky Country; 4-6 miles is the norm.
