I just happen to have a R700 long action & Hart #5, 28'' barrel at the smiths as we speak 27 nosler reamer has been ordered today.

I also have some hornady 150 grn. interbonds & nosler 150 grn. LRAB id like to use from an old 270 WSM build . Any ideas where to start the loads fellas?

thanks, lineman

COAL?

I'll get you more later, at lunch from hunt.

IIWM
COAL of 3.4
Retumbo 80grns to start, work up. that's a 92% fill ratio of available case capacity.

Make sure you are off the lands! If you haven't made your self a seating depth gauge then, seat a bullet to that depth in a dummy round, smoke the ogive and chamber the dummy. If it is hard to seat or there are marks from the lands, back off at least .020.

Be safe. Follow safe loading practices and for goedness sake, check with someone or something else.

Fred,

Thanks for the info! no worries, I am working with a very qualified smith on this project & I myself will be sure to take your advice!

Best of luck on the remainder of your hunt my friend.

Sincerely,
Cory

I just got done cleaning the 27-Nosler brass and having a good look. Rechambering the unsized brass to get a "feel" for the pressures. Made a modified case as well.

QL said 50k PSI for a 140 GMK over 86grns of Retumbo.
PT said 58k PSI

After the second look, I tend to side with PT now. Primers are not flat but the pin mark is pronounced but the biggest, ejector marks.

I just measured the cases at 102.1grns of H20.

Updated the QL model and got closer. Velocity is still underestimated but as I get more data the models will get better.

Nice capacity for the very top end of this cal IMO, definitely watching with interest since it would be a lot easier way to hit that velocity range than using the Norma Mag cases. Really looking forward to heavier bullet data, the Berger 170 gr has a G7 of .703 and at those velocities :D

even if you call 85g max that is still darn good from a 24 inch barrel. any plans on different powders.

Yes but establishing benchmarks with the 'best fit' powder.

Same velocity range as the parent case for the same projectile weight. Not surprising.

Testing day but...

I forgot my Pressure Trace II. Oh well, I'll have to go shooting again. Darn, I love when that happens.

24" barrel

Load data
Bullet: Sierra Game King 140
COAL: 3.300
Powder: Retumbo
80 grains, 91% case capacity, 3115fps
81 grains, 92% case capacity, 3174fps
82 grains, 93% case capacity, 3207fps
83 grains, 95% case capacity, 3267fps
84 grains, 96% case capacity, 3355fps
85 grains, 97% case capacity, 3333fps, light marks
86 grains, 98% case capacity, 3380fps, ejector marks, some cases did not extract until they cooled. Then it was easy.

I don't think 86grains is complete max but it's close.

I can't figure out why this rifle is ~100fps than QuickLoad predicts and the real pressure from the past run is higher as well.

Bullet: Hornady BTSP # 2735
COAL: 3.345
Powder: IMR 7828
76 grains, 89% case capacity, 3223fps, 50k PSI
77 grains, 90% case capacity, 3289fps, 53k PSI
78 grains, 91% case capacity, 3364fps, 56k PSI, light marks
79 grains, 92% case capacity, Missed it, still in the box
80 grains, 94% case capacity, 3441fps, 62k PSI, ejector marks
81 grains, 95% case capacity, 3465fps, 63k PSI
82 grains, 96% case capacity, 3553fps, 64k PSI

I think 82grains is complete max, even a bit +P.

I had loads going up to 87 grains. Stopped to save the brass. I will reload them at 77, 78 and 79.

3800fps from a 24" barrel. Gotta love it.gun)

that's a big jump in speed between 81-82 grains. dropped barrel at smith last week cant wait to see what a 27 inch is going to do. were those btsp 140s

I'm only doing one round at each charge. I consider 3 better proof of velocity and pressure.

However it corollartes to QL.

was wondering it you had a chance to run any 165 matrix yet? was thinking about building a 270 wsm but might was to do the 27 nosler is it a pain to neck up the the 27 from 26Nosler im new to reloading so dont know much? how is the recoil? are you running a brake? i was thinking a 26" barrel with the 165 matrix or 170 berger if the come out what kinda velcoity do you think they would get 3200ish? thanks for your time
The Matrix have not arrived.

Necking up is a diddle.

Recoil is stout so yes, I recommend a brake. My brake is barrel diameter so its not.much.

I have not yet modeled the 165 and I don't have my PC today but I think I can make 3200fps in a 24"/

Yes go with a 26"
