You never know, look close !

I have not taken the time myself to test if taping a muzzle break affects the effectiveness of the break or not.
What is the verdict from you guys who have tested this?
And WOW! that is definitely a scary moment, glad your freind is ok.

I use the finger cut off of a nitrile glove on muzzle brakes. Zero effect and it virtually disappears on firing.

A long time friend of mine recently avoided a catastrophic failure and still is not exactly sure what happened. After dropping his Browning A-bolt 7mm mag in the snow, mud, leaves and debris, removed the bolt, checked the barrel and cleaned off the end and thought things were fine. Later on fired a shot and had everything literally come apart in his hands. He's very fortunate not to injured himself, but is bewildered as to what happened because he checked it all just like we all would...the only thing I can figure some of the snow must have melted and then turned to ice in the 14° air, so I guess we all need to look better and closer when we drop our rifles..View attachment 622306View attachment 622307
Now he has a dowsing rod😂

Good that he was not hurt. A few years ago I was hog hunting and stupidly tried to jump over a ditch (we were having a lot of rain so it was muddy). Needless to say, I dropped my rifle in the water/mud. I always take two rifles with me hunting so I just swapped rifles. This is more reason for me to do that, so I can have adequate time to ensure everything is clear of obstructions.

Once upon a time, many years ago one of my uncles would take a kids balloon and put it over the muzzle to keep rain, snow and other crap out of the barrel. I still do that from time to time, especially if it's raining. It doesn't affect accuracy at all (tried it on the range) because the air rushing ahead of the bullet blows a hole in the rubber material, clearing the way for the bullet to leave the barrel unobstructed. Balloon material is a lot tougher than one might think. It will keep crap from getting inside the barrel from a fall, or at least if it was broken would give you fair warning to check further.

Our rifles have the muzzle taped at all times!

We each keep a partial roll of electrical tape in our day packs. When/if shots are fired…..the tape is replaced at the earliest convenient time.

Electrical tape can be used for a multitude of things in the field……from taping the muzzle, to minor temporary repairs, to first aid!

IMO….an indispensable item to carry! memtb

I've used electrical tape may times, but then I went to using those small water balloons the kids play with. Cheap and puncture/tear with no impacts on bullet accuracy. At least in my tests. However, they are a little more fragile than the e-tape.

There are videos on YouTube that shows electrical taped wrapped completely around a muzzle brake, also (one layer). I've been taping my muzzle since, well, since a long time ago. No issues, it "pops" with the displacement of the air in the barrel before the bullet gets to it. I feel like I read about taping a rifle muzzle back in the '80s from Shooting Times magazine.

Very likely that that's where/when I started……Shooting Times was my go to magazine since the '70's! memtb
