Best cartrige for long range target and also for Elk hunting.

I have been lucky enough to kill multiple elk with -
6.5 CM 140 gr Cow
7mm Rem Mag 168 gr Bulls and Cows
7 PRC 180 gr Bull
28 Nosler 195 gr Bull
300 WSM 175 gr Bulls and Cows
300 Norma Mag 230 gr Bulls
The 300 NM just puts the absolute smack down on elk. But if I could only have one rifle for long range shooting and North American big game it would be in the 7mm category with 7PRC being my choice.

I found this interesting…..and very misleading!

I opened the attachment, and found their write-up and data laughable!

Nowhere is the firearm weight mentioned……as this is a key component in felt recoil computation. The included article also stated that recoil at or above 30 ft/ lbs as "massive" recoil……again laughable. My wife's "non braked" hunting rifle is at 39 ft/lbs. felt recoil which she shoots pretty darn good…….and she ain't a linebacker in the NFL!

Perhaps for some of today's shooters…..30 ft/lbs may be considered "massive". Perhaps this "new breed" of shooters would be more at home on a golf course! memtb
Cut their ManBuns & have your beloved show them so they ManUp❗🤣❗🤣
Once again: " there is No Substitute for HP❗

The 7 prc looks to be phenomenal on the ballistics side, but looking at 600 rd barrel life from what I been told. So yeah I'm not a fan either. The last couple weeks, the 300 prc peaked my interest again especially since most of my shooting with it will be long range target. What would the bullet drop difference be on the 300 prc vs the 300 WM at say 1000 yds.
You should get closer to 1000-1500 rounds out of the 7prc as long as you don't do long shot strings and get it super hot.

Definitely a 260...since all these dinosaurs are afraid of the Creedmoor.

Since you want a "target" rifle that you can take hunting, I would look at a short action sumpinorotha...Learn to shoot so well you can't miss. Then cartridge won't matter. Even a 6.5 PRC with itty bitty little bullets, without a brake gives a good recoil. My first "customized" rifle was a 270 win with an 8 twist to shoot heavy 165/175 gr pills. That was a 1000 yard hammer at elk elevation. That one could be shot all day at 9.5 lbs.

Magnums are fun, but not to shoot all day, even with a brake, can, combo.
