Your Ultimate 500 Yard Rig

Not really sure what you want for a response. This is a long range hunting page so there is a pretty strong chance someone preaching ethics or range restrictions is going to ruffle feathers. I hunt with a bow almost exclusively so most arguments about hunting are lost on me. I do hunt predators long range and have guided and outfitted countless rifle hunts. As far as credentials I guess competing in multiple long range comp's and instructing long range shooting is enough to satisfy my personal believes about my own abilities. I don't judge others until I actually see their performance, I leave that to keyboard warriors.

Mine is an Xbolt stainless steel long range hunter in 300 wm. It bedded into a Boyds laminate stock. Has a Vortex Razor HD LH 3x15 scope. An Mcarbo trigger spring. The lugs are lapped and so are the scope rings. Everything is torqued and lock tite to specs. Comes in at 9.5lbs with out the sling. Bullet is a Hornady 220grain eldx going 2940fps. Hornady brass, win mag primer, 77.8 grains of retumbo, 2.770 ogiv, 3.45" OAL. Stacks bullets at 100 yards and doesn't open up much at 500. Generally around 1.5" at 500. Had some less. Had some 3". But most right around 1.5" from prone. Hopefully next year I get to head west. Thats the plan anyways.
Utah is the best! 93% of the state is public, or BLM land and they are very friendly out there. Lots of elk and good guides half a days ride around Park City.

I like your ethics! I also do not judge until I actually see and I let others judge their own actions! I used to use a bow, but past injuries now preclude that.

Sorry, even I misread, the OP's post ! YOU are right, I missed the "YOUR" part ! I put more credence in, walking, hiking a long ways ( miles and MILES ) and "Hunting". I PERSONALLY, don't like to carry, into the "Back Country", the Heavy weight Rifles (required, for those "Big Rigs") that are capable of, 1,000 yard Kills. 500 yards with Today's Bullets, DON'T require, that much Gun, just "good" shot "placement" AKA, lots of, PRACTICE. IMHO, "WE" are sending a very "bad message" to the NOOB Elk Hunter's that, a .300+ Magnum is "required" and MOST ( not all ) CAN'T shoot those "Cannon's" well, UNLESS, "Braked". I PERSONALLY like, to be able, to shoot at, Elk while "Hunting" at reasonable ranges without, Muff's on, IF,..NECESSARY and if, I don't have the time, to use them,.. without losing my Hearing from, those "Cannons" ! And the Quest for, the "best" Elk rifle/ Cartridge goes on. PS; I'm STILL "working thru" my, .338 Magnum FLINCH !
What does NOOB mean?

I do not shoot at game with any rifle past the point blank range of the rifle/load because it is unethical! That is certainly less than 400 Meters, with my Rem 700 Sendaro in .300 RUM. I am a DV hunter and am allowed to use an ATV to get way out back and do not worry about weight. I use a ranging 4-16X56 scope and expect my bullet to land inside a 4" circle at the 500 meter gong at my club's range, on a calm day, but the 190 Grain Berger VLD bullet at 3280 FPS has a PBR of only about 360 Meters according to my computer ballistics program, so I never shoot at any game animal that my laser range finder has not verified to be with in the PBR! I also do not shoot any great distance in high winds where I stalk close and use a TC Encore in .308, or a 7-08 Rem XP-100 at ranges less than 200 yards/180 Meters, half that if the wind is really up. While I can shoot to over a mile on a good day with any of several rifles I own, I would never think of doing anything that un-ethical! You have a duty to the animal to deliver a clean and fatal shot, the first time, every time. Anything less is very poor sportsmanship!

How did you get so brazen so you could dictate what others should or should not do? You have a serious emotional problem. You need professional help.

So you are walking around with a 4-16x56mm on top of an ultra mag and only shoot at point blank range?o_Oo_Oo_Oo_O
