Last month I built 3 rifles for myself:
a) 1885 257Roberts Ackley Improved Rimmed Sept 5 - Sept 29 = 24 days, my first 1885
b) Rem 700 7mmRM Sept 25 - Oct 8 = 13 days, my second Rem700
c) Commercial Mauser 260Rem Oct 8 - Oct 11 = 3 days, My 16th Mauser

The suggested cartridges:
6.5/284
7WSM
7RUM
7AM
300WM
300WSM
300RUM
338RUM
338LAP
338EDGE

I have chambered a few 300WM, but it is not as good as 7mmRM for long range.
The 284 case head is weak.
The rest are obscure.

I would really like to give the 30/378 a go as well as also running my 338 Lap...i am very interested to see the comparisons between both from an accuracy point of view and the ability to take down large Red deer Elk in NZ.
The 6.5x284 while being very accurate, I dont consider it to be a long range BIG GAME calibre...any comments?gun)

A friend told me...What really is effective is a bowling ball dropped out of a Boeing 747...if the distance is so great you can't control shot placement...no amount of "retained energy" i.e. XXX"# is a practical solution to shooting game animals.

Well,Well,Well...so what are we here for on LRH? if not to learn to make the longest surefire accurate shot on a target (it being a big game animal) and ensure that the projectile is able to do the required work when it gets there...i.e. retained energy/ correct projectile construction/contact with the vital organs.
I dont bowl and hate shooting paper. LRH = Long Range HUNTING. My 7mm STW was built especially for hunting Tahr and Chamois in NZ, the 338 Lap is for larger antlered game in Oz and NZ. No bowling here only hunting, fishing, camping and 4WDing.
P.S. would like to know how you went with the bowling ball out of the 747 trick??

Well- what you have here is a picture or rather a few pictures worth millions of words:
First Shawn Carlock's super duper 338 Edge magnum kills @1025-deer/669-black bear/another deer probably < 800 yds...to me great shooting but no more dead than with 7mm or 6.5mm w/ VLDs--

The good ol 300 win mag! brass and ammo available all over the earth! Hornady 150gmx superformance loads @ 3525 out of my 26" barrels... 220smk and 210 berger vlds @2900 stable and not transsonic until 1450+ yards.

Yep 2 loads to hunt ever animal on the earth. 2 loads for every target beyween 25 yards and 1500 meters...

Retumbo, RL25, RL22, H1000 available anywhere...

Nothing fancy, Just works.

I have to agree with the 300 win mag is fantastic. The farthest I have tested the 180 Accubond is at 800 and I consistently have 12 inch 5 shot groups using Imr 4350. This is with the savage long range hunter. It was not my first choice but, I got a great deal on it with a local gun shop having 30 days to clear there inventory. Brass is not to expensive, it seems to last 5 reloads with out any problems. I don't toss it but don't feel 100 % confident in it. I have not used it on any big game yet but would assume it would preform very well as long as shots are kept under 600 yards. The velocity that is the most accurate in my rifle is not near a max load. The fps dips below the manufactures minimum at that range. Really I don't think it matters what caliber is used, they all preform well as long as you hit where you aim. Its my understanding that many big game animals were killed before magnums came around. So whatever you choose just shoot till your confident and move back till your groups are the size of an average dinner plate. That would be my max distance. If the wife would let me, I would do one of the 6.5 mm cartridges, but that would be a strictly bench rest gun. I am not sure if I want one cause they are the latest fad or because of the high bc.

I owned a 6.5-06 ackley improved and LOVED it. However the time and energy required to make up 500 brass, fire form them, anneal them, load them..... It was a lot of work and a labor of love. Low recoil and very looooonnnnngggg sexy low drag bullets that fly real flat... Loved that.

If factory ammo availability was never an issue and I knew the airline, kids or wife couldn't misplace my gorgeous reloads..... Then I would Build and handload a 7mm built on the 338 lapua case. Slippery long heavy bullets at less weight than 30 cal equivalents and push them through a 30" barrel would allow you to run heavy loads of rl25, retumbo maybe h1000.

For factory ammo in a short action the 7wsm seems to be VERY impressive cut the barrel with "freebore" to allow loading the bullets with long lead lengths to max magazine length, 26" barrel to take advantage... Might make a good winter project.

BTW that 180 accubond is a favorite of some long range elk hunters I know... They guarantee it expands nicely to 1600fps. Regardless if fired from a 308 or a 300ultra... I will let you figure out how far out they are hitting them!
