Your favorite cartridge based off .30-06?

I like the Gibbs cartridges. He was a little nuts but it takes pioneers to tame the unknown. He pushed the limits and charted a bit of territory for us.

Same thing. Ruger sbh bisley 480. I cut the chambers to linebaugh length but I still use 480 brass for most loads, including the 530gr cast in the pic. View attachment 329522

And the same bullet in my 475rum.

That's a 475 Ultra Mag, right? What's the MV with the TSX?

I own a 30-06 that was my grandfathers. 40 years ago a 270 and for the last 35 or so years a 280 or 280AI. The performance of the 280AI is my favorite and I have taken everything from blacktail deer to elk with it.

2550 over 110gr h4350 from 24" 1:10" McGowan. It's pretty much the only rifle I carry anymore. Braked, recoil is about like 300wm. The 530gr cast is unbelievably impressive on critters. Like a lightning strike. DRT no matter where they are hit. The shock is amazing and it doesn't just shock on impact like expanding bullets in smaller calibers. Line up 12 gallon jugs of water and it explodes 10 of them. heres the EXIT of 6 shots fired at the other side2of 22" hemlock.

I'll stop Hijacking now. :)

I'm shooting and reloading 25-06, 6.5-06, .270, 280 AI, 30-06, and 35 Whelen. My current favorite is 280 AI, but maybe because it is my newest and lightest rifle. I still have a spot in the safe for a .338-06, but then what would I do with my .338 Win Mag?
Sell it, I sold my 338WM when I had my 35 Whelen completed, then put together a 35 Whelen AI. Then sold my 35 Whelen AI and bought a model 70 in 338/06. I don't miss the 4 different 338WM rifles I have owned.

I don't own anything 30.06 based but for some reason the 6.5-280AI intrigues me.

I don't know where it would fit in my stable that I don't already have covered though.

  • 6.5 Grendel
  • 6.5x47 Lapua
  • 260 Rem
  • 260AI
  • 6.5-284 Norma
  • 264 Win Mag
Looks like you're mostly concentrated on the .264 cartridges. Those are all good cartridges, too. The 6.5-06 is a little less over bore than the 6.5=280AI, and its easy to make from .270 win brass. You might look at that, instead. You can always Ackley Improve it later, if you want. I use .270 brass to make 25-06 just because of availability.

My very first deer was killed with a 30-06 I was lent to hunt bean fields because my .270 was having scope issues used the .270 for years and only killed 2 grey foxes then shot at a doe at 265 yards and I shot under I was young and said I want a bigger gun bought a 1969 Belgium made browning in 7mm mag killed my very first buck and said it's to much for around here them I bought a .280 rem and I have since then considered it the best offspring from the 06 don't get me wrong I want a 25-06 but something about that .280 won't let me buy another offspring of the 06 sry for the long post

My favorite is the 280, but the 270, 30-06 and 35 Whelen are also very high on the list. I've shot a few deer with my 25-06, it smacks the H out of a coyote too but it just doesn't get pulled out for much of anything over my 280.

Yes. I'm heavily invested in 6.5 caliber cartridges.

Pardon my ignorance but how oils a 6.5-06 be any less overboard than the 6.5-280AI? They are both based on the same parent case as is the 270.
