WRONG GUNS GUYS...be a hunter pls

why do you guys use rifles like 300RUM 338LM and so on. for normal deer at shortish ranges like 300-400-500 yards? you dont need to use that much gun powder. l always try and put a hole in the animal-but it looks like you dudes are trying to drill a hole in the mountanin aswell as the animal. and go to the pub and talk about it '' l shot a deer today from 350 yards and my bullet whent 2 meters in to the side of the mountain after exiting the deer. and the other guy sais- ohh whell thats nothing l shot a deer from 200 yards the bullet first whent through 5 pine trees then killing the animal and l found the bullet 10 feet inside the mountain. you wanna advice. use 30-06 308 7mm-08 and so on and for extender ranges for deer go with a 7mm rem mag or a 300 wm. you dont need bigger rounds. remember you shoot beter with less recoıl.:) and the 270 ofcourse. if you gonna kill big big game than ok 300rum is allright.

I have a very limited budget when it comes to guns. I'm also in a unique situation where when deer or hog hunting I'm as likely to shoot an animal at 50yds as I am at a 1,000yds.

I also shoot in a lot of wind so high BC bullets are very important in my selecting calibers.

If all I was shooting were deer and smaller sized game I wouldn't feel the need to own anything bigger or more powerful than my .260.

In reality though hogs are both considered to be a nuisance and trophy animal and to guarantee a kill on the big boars you need to penetrate up to 3" of cartilage before you even get to the rib cage or shoulder bones and it takes a great deal of penetrating power to do that at even medium much less long range.

I'm also planning to make a few hunts over the next five years for Elk, and possibly Moose and bears.

With all of the above as a consideration that requires me to have at least one long range monster killer and for that I decided on the .300 Rum.

I have the Rum as my dedicated long range rig and it is both heavy enough and accurate enough to fill that role for me whether I'm shooting at a bobcat at or an Elk at 1,000yds, and have the confidence that I will get a one shot kill.

Now I also own one light weight 7mm STW and one LW 300wm and at least one of them will go along with me along with the 300 Rum when I make those "once in a lifetime" hunts for Elk, Moose, Bear, and if I'm very lucky one day a Sheep and Caribou as well.

Now if I want to just have fun shooting deer and varmints at up to 900yds, from a good set position I'll get out the AR-260 and have a very good time.

I could go on about better BC's, more energy, less wind drift and all the other stuff, but it was pretty well covered in previous responses, so I'm just going to go with, because I can.

Interesting discussion...

For some of us, long range rifles are other forms of toys we like to tinker with, just like some folks like to have 500 horse-power cars or gold-plated handguns.

For others, a long range rifle is a tool suited for the task at hand. One does not use a 6.5 X .284 for elephants because a .375 H & H or a .458 Win. Mag. are better suited for the job. By the same token, one does not take shots at 500 meter + distances with a .458 because of the .458's poor ballistics, although I have a lot of fun trying to hit rabbits at 200 meters + with my .454 Casull lever action rifle, because of the challenge it presents.

My personal long range hunting rifle is a .284 Winchester. I could have chosen a 338 Edge or a 300 Weatherby, but that was my personal choice, just like other shooters choose different rifle/caliber combinations.

One of the great things about being fortunate to live in America is having freedom of choice. You are free to choose your guns, religion, brand of coffee, etc. If you don't like using long range rifles or long range hunting, you are also free not to do engage in this.

Why .338 Ultra's, 338-378, 338 Edge, 338 Lapua, 300 ultras etc ?? Because they are better .Why not more energy, less wind drift, more killing power???? Why go with smaller calibers less capable??? Alot of the smaller calibers do not have the power needed for long range shots on bear, elk moose. Smaller isn't better and it never will be........If your recoil sensitive, scared to death to burn more of your precious powder or flich at muzzle blast don't shoot long range at Deer, elk bear, moose Why Not use a caliber that will get it done instead of one that MIGHT ??? Plain ridiculous...

People have hunted since the dawn of time.

We're the most effective and insatiable predator on the planet.

We thrived long before rifles were invented.

The 30-06 has been an effective 1,000yd rifle for over 100yrs.
We didn't stop there. And, I don't think it's going to stop with the 300gr Berger Hybrid.

For some, it's all about the destination. And for others, it's the journey that counts.

It's all about what the shooter wants. If I am going to a place were I can get a shot that might stretch out 1200-1500 I am taking one of my bigger pieces. If I am limited to 500 or less I take smaller pieces. The thing we can't control is where the game comes out. If I have a 338 Lapua and I am sitting on a field watching 1000+ yards and the trophy of a lifetime walks out 50 yards away guess what I am shooting.

I can use my 338 Norma up close also, but I cant use my 30-30 at 1k.

I've seen my fair share of dead critters throughout the years and have yet to see a dead one that is more dead than another.

I would be willing to bet that there are very few guys here that hunt because they are starving so the small amount of meat loss that occurs when using the magnum guns doesn't really matter (I know most all of us eat the animals we harvest but we could make it without them). I would much rather have more gun than necessary and make a clean kill with what could be a crippling shot with a gun that is just adequate. I would by no means ever use a magnum gun as an excuse to take careless shots but things happen no matter how careful you are. The ranges soundwaves was calling short (300-500 yards) still leave alot of room for error and if you were to accidently pull a shot into the guts I would much rather have a 300 RUM than a 308 Win. shooting through those guts at 400 yards. And bottom line is it comes down to personal preference. If you don't like big guns then don't shoot them, it leaves a better powder supply for those of us that do!

The show I watched on TV that said a 300WM is the minimum acceptable caliber for deer at 100 yds and people trying to shoot elk at 1000 yds with that same cartridge are equally ridiculous.

I don't own a 338 and probably never will....I don't have a long enough range to make practice interesting and safe. I use a 300WM and limit myself to 800 yds. However if I had a longer range to shoot on and a more expensive rangefinder, the advantages of 338s at 800+ yds should be self-evident to anyone paying attention. Now if you're prepared for a 900yd shot and an elk walks out at 150 yds....well, what are you to do? I once shot an elk at almost 700 yds that I had nearly shot at 80 yds the day before, I would not have hesitated to shoot it because it was too close had I gotten that shot!!

I understand why most of the guys here hunt with these huge ultra super duper ginormous magnarifles. They lift weights, talk like swartzeneger, run triathlons with 120lbs packs and shoot critters in the mountains of colorado and wyoming from their porch in virginia. Oh, and because they are trying to make up for the fact that they don't have a 6.5-284 or a 6.5x55. Thats all it is, and its ok. Nobody is perfect. We have found a site where they can freely talk about their insecurity. Me, I shoot 6.5mm rifles, this way I know, if I can see it, I have just the right rifle.

Now that that is out of the way, If I build a custom rifle it will be a 460 weatherby magnum! Why?? Because I want to load 300 grain remington hollow points at 3300 fps and shoot a deer at 100 yards and watch it pop like a prairie dog!!! Death should be instant so I believe "humane" is covered. On another note, I have traveled a through some mountains in Turkey, and I cannot imagine why you would not want a ginormous super duper ultra long range extreme magnum. You could shoot whatever type of horned animal it is you have there from your porch to wherever it happened to be as well! And if I could swing a custom rifle, I would probably have a 338 Edge to match that 460! I wanna shoot elk from my bedroom window too!
That is why I shoot a 338 Norma, 340 WBY BEFORE THAT , for 20 yrs, 7RM,BEFORE THAT243 first. Learned my lessons on 30+ elk. GO BIG OR GO HOME.ARRRG, I'LL BE BACK:D

I shoot everything with my 300 RUM I have shot it enough where i feel 100% confident with each squeeze of the trigger. I like watching my animals hit the ground as soon as i touch one off thats why i use the RUM. I dont believe you can say "to much of a round" as long as the amimal is killed without suffering whats it matter if a deer is shot with a 300 rum or 223 rem. Hell next year ill be taking my deer and elk with a 338 lapua pushing a 300gr hollow point. Dead is dead in my opinion how you do it is up to the individual. Just my opinion!

l really can make great threads that gets lots of arguments in it lol.

messing with you guys.

l wish l could own the guns you guys do. a sauer rifle costs 10000 dolars here so we cant have 2-3 rifles because we have to pay 5000 dolars tax for each rifle every 3 years !!!!! thats why we choose a all round rifle. if l ownd a 338LM tac rifle l would eaven take it rabbit shootin :)
