Just wanted a little more boom then a 22lr trainer, looking forward to some trigger time at value prices. Upside is they still fling the varmint bullets if you want them to.

I shoot a 55Vmax at about 3150 from a Ruger Predator/Rem 700 well past 500yds. I need a larger target 500 and farther or a measured/good estimate aiming point as my 4-12 Diamond Back doesn't have the hold marks. It free falls into the kill zone with old school Kentucky Windage!

I used to shoot a similar setup but graduating to a 75 grain ELDM is a NOTICEABLE performance upgrade past 400 yards.

I do miss the days of Kentucky windage with a Vmax though. Lots of good memories with that when I was first getting into long range.

Kick it up a notch with the 223 AI, with NO downside with dot size groups. Kick it up another notch with a 22/204 with Winchester brass(if it can be found). I am shooting the 53g V max at 3700 fps in the 22/204, and 3600 in the AI.

26" barrels in all cases with .020 freebore, 12 twist barrels.

I think the 223 is just the easy button. Not saying it's "the best" but it's so dang easy and cheap, what's not to love?

When I want some serious 22 cal performance I grab the 22 Creedmoor.

But, there is a best way,, you can be sure.
It all begins with a bullet. You build best around that.

Accuracy when fire forming to the AI is incredible, to say the least....just remember this issue. Other advantages also. I shot untold thousands of 223's at p. dogs, as soon as I went to the AI version, what an eye opener, which offers a tremendous advantage in speed with amazing accuracy.

As Mike said, bullet quality is huge. Also, the application for ringing steel vs chucks, coyotes are another issue.

I discovered the joy of a long range .223 about 15 years ago! Definitely fun and DEFINITELY inexpensive. Best I shot it was.188 but it's a .250 ( better said...I'm a .250) at 100 regularly. I've only shot it to 500 which was enough....now I'll have to stretch it out...just cause! That's a 1" red dot@ 100 10rds

Worth it! Although I've heard mixed opinions on whether AI is worth it in the 223

that's fair, but i'll end up doing it sometime either way lol

I shoot a 16+lb AR as my primary pdog rifle. It seems to shoot whatever I put in it but my primary load is R15 with 73gr ELDMs or 77gr SMKs, both of which will shoot 1/2MOA. It costs a fraction of anything else I load for to shoot and can reach way the hell out there.

about how much increase in velocity are you getting, regarding your AI vs when it was standard??

Dang this has me rethinking my 6 creedmoor build. Just waiting on the barrel for it, already have all my other components.

I wish the aero solus offered a 223 bolt face for a budget build, guess I could do a savage build.

6 creed is worth owning, but so is a precision 223
