Why you should consider a 223 for a LR rifle

OK. Now this is getting out of hand. Where can a fella get a 20"-24" heavy barrel for an AR? Also, what twist would be most favorable for the heavy bullets 7-7.5-8? Asking for a friend.
I am still wondering what that "thing" skipglo posted on page 2 was. Looks like an AR that shoots little bitty holes.

You are correct 1/7 twist w/muzzle velocity of 2900fps....1930ft elevation. I assume there was adequate stability, even at a mile, but I don't know how to figure that? She actually had a pretty impressive group on the target backer with the misses around the jug. My terminology in the first post was incorrect, the bullet didn't actually bounce off, but glanced off as the jug was at an angle and not flat.

Impressive!

Stability looks good

The 62 gr. Hornady ELDMVT would do well with a 7.7 twist at 3200 from a .223.

I need to correct my spread sheet that shows good Sg with a 9 twist using the 62 ELDM at 3200 - BAD error on bullet diameter.

The new Hornady ELDVT at 3200 fps from a 9 twist .223 should improve long range performance.

G7 BC is .199, length = 1.055 inches

3600 fps from a 7.7 twist .22-.250 might be problematic with massive RPM's but a "comfortable" Sg = 1.57 with easy 256,000 rpms out of a 9 twist .223 looks good. The Hornady ballistics calculator has velocity over 1,400 fps at 1,000, 3500 ft. altitude, mild day.

Midway has them for $0.36 each.CFE223, Staball Match, or 8208 should work.
Bad info - incorrect bullet diameter - should be .224 not .244  Haste makes waste.

Looks like an 8 twist or faster is needed for the 62 ELDMVT. I don't plan to shoot these with my 9 twist .223.

I have two fast twist AR's one has a 7 twist barrel and the other has an 8 twist. An 8 twist barrel will stabilize anything that can be loaded to mag length.

Hornady .224 62 ELDM VT

Hornady site has .395 G1 BC, .199 G7 BC, Bullet length should be 1.055,

Comparing the .224 62 ELDM VT length of 1.055 with that of the 68 .224 HpBt length of .917 makes me think there is a large void under the plastic tip or an extended plastic tip. Looking at the Miller Sg estimator the plastic tip length is subtracted from the bullet OAL for running the estimator -( 1+ ((B22-B23)/B20^2)). Continuing on with assuming the plastic point is weightless, I am making an assumption that the bullet OAL might be shortened slightly more like .2 inches vs. .14 inches, or .06 inches. This increases the Sg from 1.33 to 1.52.

Worth a try out of our 9 twist .223 @ 3200 fps at 300 yards on a nippy day. If not, my 7.7 twist .22-.250 should work provided 336 K plus RPM's don't cause bullet failure.

I am wrong, got the 62 grain .224 mixed up with the 80 grain .243 it is .410 g1 bc. and the.224 is .395 g1 bc. Good catch I may have had too much wine lol 😵‍💫.

I do still believe that it's going to take a 1:8" twist.

I'm at 110' elevation maybe higher could work but it's an awful long bullet.

yea, but they don't;) look as cool

They may not, but those premium Tikkas are a terrible value for what you're getting. You could do the same upgrades for less money or better yet buy a stainless model and have it professionally cerakoted which is generally better quality than a factory job and then have the bolt fluted and still be money ahead depending on model to put towards a better stock. Or for a little more money do a semi custom with a proof CF.
