What's your caliber of choice, for coyotes?

ur kiddin, right. i'm a dr., not a dunce.

I am thinking the jury is still out about your doctorate of dunceology.
Just so you understand I am not talking .17 hmr but a .17 Remington, just a bit of difference there.
If you have never shot or killed with a .17 Rem then I guess you read a lot of gun rags where the writers shoots long range and awesome groups from a key board!
It is either that or you do have a doctorate of dunceology.
gun)Shoot em where they live is what it takes but then again if you can't shoot then stay on the porch.
Have a good day keep studying, one day you will get your PHD!:D

.17 Remington is my choice.
I like the idea of flat shooting, devastating killing power, minimum pelt damage, bang flop
dead right there performance.
It is not as wind sensitive as some think, very close to .223.
Out to 300 yards plus the .17 gets my nod.
I have many other rifles to shoot Kye-Dogs with but I always grab my .17 Remington!
gun)Shooting coyotes does not always mean a big boom and heavy bullets!

Maybe, but I wouldn't trust it to be anything but wind sensative past 100 yards. 223 isn't ideal either.
Still a usefull rifle up to 150-200 yards. Past that I want more. Past 400, I use my 6mm AI

I shoot 2-3 coyotes a month typically and I use my 25-06 with 100 TTSX it hammers them, shoots flat and saves pelts. I dont save pelts but if I did I would for sure still use this bullet.

Sonny Boy, you have to get out and learn to shoot and doping the wind is all part of the game REGAURDLESS of caliber shot.
The 6 AI is a good round but the wind will still push that little pill side ways no matter what the articles tell you!
Like I said the .17Rem is a very useful coyote caliber and will kill past 300 yards reliably.
You will never learn to shoot properly while exchanging horse power for marksmanship!
Wild cat and custom rifles all have their place after you learn to shoot at long range and doping the wind is all part of it.
Keep working on it and you may impress some one else.
By tHe way if you can not shoot a .223 out to 400 yards then why would you have a 6AI ?
Seems like a waste of good powder and lead but it's your dollar.
Look I am not poking fun of you but I have spent to many years behind a gun counter and as a commercial ammo loader and have heard a truck load of all kinds of stuff.
Put fun back in shooting and try a .22 hornet and learn to dope wind then try a .17 Rem and you maybe surprised at what you thought you knew. It is like learning to drive start with a stick then you can drive about anything, start with an automatic then try and drive a stick, now you are stuck. Same thing with putting down the magazines and start burning powder.
You may surprise your self at how quick you can shoot with the wind.
I am not sure what part of the country you live but if you can find some public land, take your 6 AI or if you have a .223 and start bustin caps. You will learn a lot plus have a ball!
Good luck to you in your future of shooting!
gun)Shoot em where they live and have a sharp knife!

Sonny Boy? You clearly need to check who you are talking to. Where I am from those are fighting words.

I know how to shoot in the wind, and yes, wind drift affects all rounds. Thanks genius. But it effects a 6mm FAR less than a 17. And it isn't articles I am reading. That is from experience. I am just getting into the 6 AI, but I have shot 243s and 6mm Rems for a lot of years before that.

You may have spent a lot of time behind a counter and as a 'commercial ammo loader', but I have spent plenty of time as a handloader and behind an actual gun shooting living targets, in conditions that are rarely less than 15 mph of wind. I have shot rimfires all the way up to 50 BMGs at moving targets when I was in the service.

If you think 17 Rem is ideal for yotes out to 300 yards, you are just plain wrong. Will it work, sure, sometimes. Is it ideal, NOPE. Several angle shots will find the yote running away from you never to be found. I don't like wounding animals, even if they are varmints.

I think you have been watching too much TV. I wont disagree a .17 is a great little round, however I wouldnt use it as my primary coyote gun either. For several reasons and Lapua Guy pretty much nailed the main ones. (not to mention the thread starter said he wanted something to hit harder than his 223) You can sit there and say learn to dope the wind all day long but if you have ever had the opportunity to shoot at very many coyotes, many times....wait MOST times in fact you dont get a chance to dope wind. you are there to put hair on the ground. The most rediculous statement you made was saying he is wasting his time and money shooting a 6mm because as you put it. the wind will still push it sideways. Well I hate to break it to you but there are no magical bullets out there. wind drift is ALWAYS an issue when wind is present. However it will need addressed less often with higher bc bullets. but what lapua guy was trying to say if you would just read and comprehend rather than getting your ego hurt was that he likes the 6mm ai because it shoots a good size bullet to carry a good wack (better than a 223), and it fights the wind better than the 223 becuase of the higher bc. I dont care how many years you spent behind a gun counter. in fact when I go to a sporting goods store the guy behind the counter is the last guy im asking for advice cause he usually doesnt know jack. Not saying you dont know anything but YOU saying you stood behind a counter does not validate your opinion in any way. I suggest you get out from behind the counter and get behind a gun maybe base your next post on fact rather than your imagination

Great minds think a like, but based on the context of his post, I am guessing we weren't the only ones that would take issue with what he said.

I love how he said I couldn't shoot a 223 past 400. We freaking qual with M-16s with iron sights at 600 yards! Doesn't mean I am going to shoot an animal at that range with that weapon if I have a better alternative.

And I am sure there are plenty more here who were thinking the same thing as Lupua Guy and Tikka Mike that chose to say nothing. :)

And you are smarter for it. I don't suffer fools well enough at times. I should have just let it go, but he ****ed me off with that 'sonny boy' comment.

DANG IT LAPUA GUY! I was replying and you beat me to it! Funny thing is we both said about the same thing.

Now guys the Thread was What my choice of Caliber for Coyotes not the Ideal caliber.
I shoot the .17 Rem because it works up close and out a ways.
There is no best round for any animal period.
I do not have to use my .17 as I have many others I can grab but I use it because it works period!
If the .17 was not a good coyote rifle then I guess the 1000's of coyotes killed every year by the .17 should feel slighted.
If there was one best rifle or caliber then we would have no need for any others.
You said you can shoot in the wind then good on you. I live in Wyoming and if the wind starts any where it is here!
We can sit here and stir the pot and I can give you my history and back ground as it is related to shooting and hunting not included my time behind a counter but it would do no good.
Let's just say I have extensive history including 23 years military along with 15 years Navy Spec War.
How many years were you in and what branch did you serve? No matter which branch you served or where you served then a big thank you is in order.
We can beat this dead horse but it aint gettin up.
Like I saidgun)if you shoot em where they live just make sure you have a sharp knife!
By the way I do like the 6mm AI, one great round.

I live in Wyoming too I travel from basin down to wamsutter and back every week so if anyone knows about wind its me. It looks like your just back peddaling now. Maybe you should watch how you approach people. If this were a bar I imagine you would have gotten a beating
