No not with the 338, I usually just hunt with my 300 win mag. It is a bit lighter and doesn't chew up the meat as much. I am mainly just hunting deer and bear so don't need much more than the win.
Cool, that's awesome. Do you have a season for Elk or can you hunt them all year round like we can deer here in NZ.
Not trying to top this by any means. I was shooting rabbits last Saturday with my son using a 65-284 and 130 VLD. Took eight shots and got 5 rabbits at ranges between 350 and 500. I was spot on for elevation but the wind was making me miss by a dime at times.
My son was spotting for me. He's 18 but drops everything to go hunting/shooting with his old man
That's very true. Good shooting. What was your load in the 270 WSMThis is my second NF 2.5-10. The first was on a custom 270 WSM that was used to shoot marmots out to 800 yards. It was plenty of scope. Used it on one shot on a marmot at just over 1K yards. I missed, but only by inches. Didn't get the wind quite right. I'll gladly take the extra half pound of this scope to get turrets and reliability I have come to trust.
Cool, I built a really nice 300 WM LH Stiller TAC 300 shoots like a dream but not a lot that requires a 300 hereNo not with the 338, I usually just hunt with my 300 win mag. I was shooting Berger 140 grain HVLD's at 3100 something with H4831sc. Shot a couple elk with that load too but my preferred elk load was 140 grain Accubonds in front of H4350. The Berger's were a solid half minute load and frequently better. Marmots within 650 yards were a pretty sure thing. That's very true. Good shooting. What was your load in the 270 WSM

Like the Elk, and like the 300 WM. Best for me was a Cow "Elk" @aprox 800+/- yds @ 8500 ft and about 28*. Blue sky's and NO Wind. One shot, one more elk. 180 gr Nosler BT with H-1000 (79) gr and LR Mag primers!Has worked for me for many years! My elk load last season was a 7 WSM w/ 168gr berger classic hunters doing around 2850fps. I have since gotten rid of the barrel and am going to a Bartlein 7 SAUM. Not sure which bullet yet.
We went 3 for 3. My dad shot a nice busted up bull (1st pic) at 250 yds w/ a 300 WM, my brother shot the 6x6 (2nd pic) at 150 yds with a 300 WM and I shot a 7x6 (3rd pic) at 325 yds.
