What’s the POWDER you love to hate?

Oh the Enduron powders…I tried 4166, 7977. No luck in anything
Well you already know about me and 4955

But I had excellent results with 4451, 7977, and 8133 (though it does burn dirty - what's the point erasing copper if you're gonna create that much carbon)

The 4451 in my 358 Norma with 250s
The 7977 ik 300 win with 180s - going slow, 2800 fps (b-tips) but one ragged hole so I left it alone
The 8133 with 225 eld m at 2760, one ragged hole capable.

RL26. A temptress until she blows your brass up.
Worked up a load for my first 6.5SS w. 150 SMKs running 3117fps. Shot great in the spring. Summer rolled around and I locked up my bolt on the first shot at 3220fps.
I had a similar experience with RL22 back when I started loading. 270 win with 140 hornadys. My load worked great for hunting in November and December, shot great in January, 3080 fps out of a 22 inch barrel…froze the action up hard in June. Don't remember the velocity but we were decidedly in 7mm rem mag territory

Rl22 is still the velocity king for ordinary bullets out of the 270, no question. But it's one of the most temp sensitive powders I've used.

I hate that body powder the old ladies that went to my church used to wear. It sent me into coughing fits and they always had to hug the cute little redhead kid. I think they quit making that body and face powder. Or I grew up and got ugly so they stay away. Was this confined to gun powder only? If it was just disregard this post.

My one hated powder made here in Australia that is also available in the rest of the world is AR2213sc, otherwise known as H4831sc, it has never reached book velocities in any cartridge I have tried it in. Have tried it in everything from 22-250AI to 375 Weatherby and most magnum cartridges and it has always been 100-200fps SLOWER than every book I use.
Simply put, it is the most frustrating powder I have ever dealt with.

Cheers.

Unless you have a powder that has a recall for whatever reason I don't believe there is such a thing as a bad powder. I guess it just depends on the rifle and application . I had an experience with StaBall 6.5 where I felt I would not use it again, but to finish off the amount I had used it in my 22/250 and ended up with a great load. Some have posted that they have had problems with Win 760 . I have had great results with it in several cartridges.. Remember what is ones man's poison is another man's food.

When shooting a ladder in a 30-06 I noticed a 100 fps jump over the previous 30 FPS increases. Glad I had my lab radar going. It was near the end of the test. H4831SC didn't flatten the primers but it was enough to back off 1.5 from that point. I love that powder and never saw my 7RM do it except ejector marks being sporadic. That is now a RE23 load that is faster and great speed over single based powder.

Sta ball 6.5, it was a mess for me. I couldn't get my most accurate gun to shoot it and it had shot great groups with four other powders. So I won't be buying it again.
Interesting. I just got some too. Bob I you are see in Az. I am surprised you are using IMR powder. I don't not use IMR powders in my rifles. Temp is a big problem with them. I had gotten some great groups and velocity with IMR powders, but as the temp moves so does the chamber pressure too. Temp change is a problem with double based powders.
