What’s the benefit of having a long necked cartridge?

LONG NECK CARTRIDGES AND LONG (VLD style) BULLETS:

The main purpose for a long neck is to accomodate longer bullets such as VLD and "hybrid" bullets that have a better BC (Ballistic Coefficient).

With a longer neck the bullet does not have to be seated way back into the powder area, compromising the volume of powder and (sometimes) raising pressures unacceptably.

Look at the success of the 6.5 Creedmor cartridge. It was specifically designed with a long neck so shooters could load high BC bullets. High power shooters disliked the .308 ballistics and difficulty loading longer competition bullets.

With a long neck you also get the ability to have a "magazine length" COAL for high BC bullets, and this was the other major reason for developing these cartridges.
