Twist for 270 Weatherby?

G’day all,
Seeing that my 270 Weatherby has a damaged throat now, long story, I’m wanting to replace the barrel and go with a faster twist for the heavy ABLR.
I have read a few posts here and there and would like your thoughts on a 9” or 8” twist?
Barrel will be an exact copy of what’s already on the rifle, which is a switch barrel on a Win Model 70 EW. Barrel has no flutes and is currently 28” long 10” twist.
Thoughts?

8 for sure. No downside when shooting the usual 140-150 class of bullets, and will allow you to shoot the 170 class, or the heavier Hammers.

1/8 will do up to 175 cup and core and any of the coppers up to 160. you might be able to get something like the 162 hammers or heavier (all solid copper) if you push it fast enough but ymmv

Another vote for a 1:8" barrel twist. My .270 AI with 30" Lilja 1:8" was built primarily for the 165/175 Matrix VLD. It propels the 175 Matrix VLD at 2993 FPS with H4831SC. I came close to 3100 FPS, but with pressure, but the group opened up.

YES 8 at minimum. i just got my 7 twist winchester rechambered to 270 BEE. at 8 you can use the best bullets and unlock the best round out there.

use 165 to 170. the 175 TGK is a sham and dangerous.

Thanks all. I’m glad I asked, because my barrel maker was set on a 9” twist.
Also, just to be clear, a lot of the bullets you recommend just aren’t available to me, but I will go 8” in case something pops up here besides the ABLR.
This will be going to New Zealand for my Dad’s hunt next year.

Normally, we use 150g Partitions in both his 270 and my 270Bee, but I have convinced him that the 3 barrels that go with this rifle, 264WM, 270Bee & 300WM will cover just about anything that crops up. There are still a population of Moose that live near to where we hunt, but only the helicopter pilots have actually seen them recently.
I can also take my custom switch barrel REM Sendero II in custom 264WM, 7STW & 6.5-300Bee (not threaded yet).

so, when i shoot 150ablr it is by far the most accurate rifle i have shot. i just make a assumption its twist helping it.

I’ve never had that issue, all of my barrels have been spot on…factory barrels are a different story though.
