This forum is funny because...

Sometimes I think there is something wrong with me, I sit up at night thinking about rifles (mostly the ones my wife says I cannot afford). I drool over the new Hemi Chargers and she always tells me to go get one or to trade my truck in for a new truck. I don't want to spend forty or fifty thousand dollars on something I would just rag the crap out of. Here was what I told her as my truck has been paid off for a while and I don't need/want another: "How about I keep my truck and take the minimum $500+ I would pay on a new one and put it aside for shooting and hunting? That way I get what I want and never have to bug you for any money! And I'll take it on the short end and just keep $500 a month."
To that she just looked at me like I was stupid!
Sounds rational to me. Some people are into vehicles or boats or ATV's, me I like rifles.

I find this forum funny because of what it does to me mentally. Let me explain...

At least once a week I talk myself into "needing" a 300 RUM.

Do I really need a rifle like this for anything right now or even in the foreseeable future? Absolutely not... But why do I keep talking myself into and then back out of getting one?

I have been visiting the shotgun slug area of the forum lately and everyone keeps talking about the Savage 220 being the most accurate option available. Last night I was really considering going to look at some and possibly buying one.

Then I remembered, I have NEVER once missed a deer with my Remington 870 12 gauge slug gun. In fact not only have I never missed a deer, I have never had to track a deer after I've shot them with my current setup. They just get blown to the ground. And to take this a step further, from where I whitetail hunt I have never seen a deer that I thought was out of range for my current setup. Literally there are no downsides to just keeping the proven system I already have.

A couple months ago I also talked myself into "needing" a thermal scope on my AR for coyote hunting at night.

Psssht... I'm ridiculous. I don't even get out hunting enough now during the day with my varmint guns, let alone making it out at night.

It's a constant struggle to keep my ego in check corresponding with my bank account + my time. But I guess life would be pretty boring if we only purchased what we "need". :)

Yours is an affliction common to many on this site (You are not alone).

As to the 300 RUM ? It is one of the most universal/versatile cartridges available.

Many cartridges have component issues and the 300 RUM is no exception. But in spite of this,
if I could only own one rifle, it would be a 300 RUM.

It can be loaded down to 30/06 energies/velocities or loaded up to take on any game in the world
with the right type and weight bullet.

I thought it was just me never being able to get my fix,It's a disease~I couldn't sleep last night because I was torn between a BC medalist or an H&S for my SPSV .243, ended up with the H&S. I am now researching triggers..... there is no end in sight just another obsession to completion but I cant seem to keep em,seems I can keep my deer hunting rigs but the reach out n touch em guns never seem complete and Im never satisfied. Hello My name is Scott and Im a gunoholic.

I'm chuckling here....

To all of you with the sickness.... here's a bit of a litmus test for you.... Ever put a rifle on the department store shopping list just to goad your wife??? Then actually buy a rifle that day??? I have... That rifle (7rem) shot well... even though it was a Wally World rifle and I made some mods go get rid of the adl cheapness...

I just finished the re-build on my 7stw and I'm trying to convince myself that my 300rum needs an action true and a new barrel... The throat is dark already (she's been digesting around 100 rounds a year for ten years now) and she's not quite shooting as well as she was new with some loads; still good enough for the hunting I do though.

My wife has pretty much said I have other rifles to work with and to wait ( I think this whole build rubbed her the wrong way as she usually doesn't say anything-- I make enough to cover a few indiscretions with rifles), but 30 cal. barrel blanks seem to keep finding their way into online shopping carts when I'm perusing for stuff I "need".

Well. ......I tell my wife it's a lot cheaper to buy new guns than trade her for a new wife. I've watched other guys "hobbies" and ex wives cost the same as a hundred custom builds. My last build seemed expensive until my buddy bought a P.O.S. boat and will never see the end of repairs. I'll take my Hobbie over other alternatives.

I don't think my stiller will need anything more than a little oil for a few years.!

All of this brings to mind the old shooters prayer, "Lord, when I die, don't let my wife sell my guns for what I told her they cost".

On a good note: firearms are still one of the best investments you can make for long term.

rifles, scopes, binoculars, and bullets are the devil

Ha ha. So true. I also used the investment angle to help the wife to understand why this hobby is so much better than other ones. Why, you cant sell back a green fee now can you? I could sell these rifles anytime if some sort of emergency came up. Ha ha. Sound familiar to anyone else?
Gotta love this stuff

Engineer40......fact is you NEED a thermal sight for your AR to pop coyotes cuz unless you're Superman, you can't see in the dark! And if you WERE superman, you'd just fry them with your x-ray vision.....I'm there for ya brother :)

I have had the affliction for many many years. This forum has opened my eyes to more and more possibilities.........and more "needs". I am extremely fortunate as "she who must be obeyed" allows me much more leeway than I deserve. I am also gathering up more and more gunsmithing equipment and hope to be fully set up by the time I retire.

I have managed to introduce several friends to reloading and long range shooting in the last couple years. To me that is what this sport is about and I hope in my retirement years to be able to turn out a handful of quality rifles a year for friends and acquaintances who will use and appreciate them and pass on the knowledge to others.
