SHERMAN MEGA LINE

Hello everyone,
I want build a short barreled rifle with the following criteria.
- Tikka action
- 16" - 18" barrel
- Suppressed (possibly breaked suppressor)
- Lightweight hunting rifle for deer up to elk
Would you recommend a 7, 300, or 338? If Max is better, that's cool too.

I have a 338 MEGA built on a tikka action. 21" carbon barrel. It shoots the 250 Bergers at 2850 FPS and the 265 ABLR at 2650. It wears a Silencerco Hybrid and comes in at 10 pounds 1 ounce with the scope, mag and can.

If you dont want a 338 suppressor, I would go with the 300 MEGA/Mag (depending on if you want to fireform or not) and run heavy 200+ grain bullets. Would be great!

I know some calibers do better with speed loss the shorter you go, which do you think is the best? At 2850 with the 250, what do you think the 5" loss would sacrifice?

If I remember correctly, the larger the bore, the better it does with loss.

I think you'd lose around 120fps or so. Maybe a touch more, just depending on the powder you use. If I were putting a 16" together, I would probably not be building it for extreme distances, and opt for a lighter bullet, in the 200-225 range. Keeping shots under 800 yards or so should still have velocity to expand. A 225 out of a 16" might be a great combo.

I'd be totally happy at 800yds. I'll look at the ballistics of a 250 Berger and see what it looks like. What do you think a 7 with 195's would push in a 16"?

I don't have any experience with the 7's personally. I have the 270ss and a 338 Mega. The load data sheet has a 26" pushing the 195's anywhere from 3000-3150, so if you cut off 10", your probably looking in the 2750-2900fps range (assuming 25 fps per inch).

That wouldn't be too shabby. Then I could load it light for deer as well. Man, decisions.
