Official Hammer bullets Terminal Performance (picture heavy)

I personally like the idea of lighter in the 45-70 to get the impact velocity higher. I think you might have seen a bit better penetration. All in all though the big heavy did is job. Congrats on a great bison done with great tradition! Glad we could be a part of it.
Thank you, I was certainly impressed with the performance. I wasn't sure which weight would be best so I went with the old 400gr standby to be safe.

The guide was so impressed he asked if I could load him some for his 1895 Guide gun. He carries it as back up in case they are charged and a headshot is needed so I was debating if I would be better off dropping down to the 300gr or 350gr for the short 18.5" barrel.

@RockyMtnMT Just out of curiosity have you shot your bullets out past the transonic zone at all? I shot the 181 HH to a mile out of my .300 Win Mag going 3260 fps at 3500ft elevation and noticed that the drop was about 5 moa more than expected with a 3 or so MOA vertical spread. I did get a hit but they were definitely struggling to group and I couldn't tell if it was the bullet or the 17 MPH winds causing the issue because they shot great to 1000.

Obviously I know that's not their purpose but I had them so I figured I would shoot them that far for kicks due to the flatness.

Not hit on you or trying to argue anything, I would just like to throw this out there as a consideration:
What is your ES/SD over all those shots? If the velocity is different by just 20 fps for any of those shots, it could account for about 2 moa of vertical. Factor in the accuracy/precision capabilities of the rifle and shooter, that could account for the other 1+ moa…or vise-versa. What was the wind direction compared to your direction of fire? Could aerodynamic jump possibly caused some of the vertical, or possibly eotvos (rotation of the earth) caused the added drop due to that direction of fire?
Not doubting the bullets can be effected by transitioning, just things to consider at that range.
 
We have not shot through the transonic. I do know that it most likely will muck things up pretty good. I think if trying to do so a very high stability factor will help quite a bit.

We are about to start working in earnest on a dedicated target line of bullets. These we will be more interested in transonic flight.

To be honest I'm not sure, it was single digits, blowing 20 and getting dark so those absolutely may have been factors. I know i could hit a 1 MOA target consistently at 1000 yards but when I stepped out to 1 mile, which was down to 1000 fps, I started getting significantly more variation in my impact shot to shot and I wasn't sure of the cause.

Sounds like a bit of everything. I am guessing that at 1000 fps the Hammer Hunter is dragging a parachute. That and it is a stinking long ways! Assuming it is a hunting weight rifle which makes it that much tougher to control well enough to be consistent that far.

It was hunting weight until I put the Revic and Nomad-L on it, so it sits at about 12 pounds currently. I got to listen my brother complain because I made him carry it a couple times as my back up rifle during the bison hunt in case the Sharps didn't work out.
