New 30/375 wildcat

I'm 700 miles from my build in Salt Lake and having withdrawals:rolleyes: but I did manage to fire form some brass and send 9 rounds down the tube before I left. I didn't chrono anything but just wanted to go thru the forming and break in process. Fire forming was easy as the brass was so close to dimension after running thru the dies and there was little shrinkage in length in most cases. There is plenty of brass to work with both in trimming to length and turning necks.
I tried my gunsmiths break in technique which seemed to work very well. The following is the process: Fire one round then clean thoroughly with bore tech, dry patch then clean with alcohol, one patch with Remoil, two dry patches, fire again. Repeat this process until copper fouling is minimal. After five rounds the fouling was greatly reduced so I then fired four rounds to determine max load for Retumbo with a 215 hybrid. This turned out to be 81 grains. I found the BAT action to be a little different than what I am used to. By the time you get any bolt stiffness, you have blown a primer. At least I hope this was the action and not a function of the brass quality? I then cleaned again and found little copper fouling. Looks like a pretty smooth bore:D!
Recoil was really mild with the 4 port muscle break but I did notice bark flying off the trees to the side of my rest:D.
First impression of the 8x32 SIII was really good. It has a 1/8th moa dot which is the first dot I've used. It is the 2 moa scope which I think will be pretty useful.
I'm chomping at the bit to get back and do some serious testing. More later.....Rich

I can't comment about any new brass but my old 375R brass has handled pressures well. It's been about 4 years now since I bought it. I bet the blown primers are because the action is so strong.

I wager the 215's will be around 3025-3050 fps for a accurate load.

Looking forward to pics!

Thanks Gunman. Ya, I'm thinking it is the action. I actually went three grains over where the pockets starting getting a little loose. Of course I didn't know that until I re primed the cases. I couldn't detect ANY bolt stiffness or excessive expansion at the web either. I must have had some serious velocity going on with that 85 grain load:D......Rich

Hi guys! I got back from a week long trip yesterday and sent a few down range today. My chrono is on the Fritz so don't have velocity readings as yet. Here is what I have so far:

I fired my first groups today in a gusty 5-20 mph wind @ 4:00 (100 yards). I was shooting 215 hybrids, H1000, and tried Fed 215, Fed 210, and BR2 primers. I found that so far the non magnum primers seem to tighten groups with the H1000 regardless of charge. This loading maxes out around 80.5 grains. I turned and trimmed the cases but did not sort them or anneal the necks as yet. I only tried oneseating depth which was right at the lands (coal 3.705"). 77.5 grains yielded one ragged hole groups around 1/4" with both the BR2 and Fed 210 primers. Fed 215's opened up to as much as 1/2". The barrel cleaned up very easily after only a 5 shot break in. This Krieger is the easiest cleaning barrel I have had yet out of Lilja, Bartlein, and Krieger. I have 35 rounds thru it now and will probably send it in for melonite before I shoot it much more but want to get it chronographed first to compare before and after affect. I haven't figured out how to post pics from my Mac yet so sent some to Phorwath. He will likely post them soon so stay tuned. So far, I am VERY impressed with the early results having done no more testing than I have. If I can improve just a LITTLE with load development, this thing will be a true "Bug Holer":D...Rich

I'm envious. Rich is having all the fun with his new outfit. Here's some Pics he would like to share with the members.

A picture of a loaded cartridge.

And pictures of two groups with different Primers and H1000. Very nice Rich. I wouldn't worry about too much more load development. Don't mess with a good thing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it... What else can I add...

3 shots @ 100 yds. Wind 5-20 mph and gusting @4:00.

Cases trimmed and turned but not sorted or annealed. Winds 5-20 mph @4:00, gusty.

Thanks a bunch Paul! Yours will be up and running before you know it. I'm going to try to figure out the chrono tomorrow. The dumb thing has worked perfectly for years. Wouldn't you know!....Rich

Well, I gave it another whirl today but didn't get very far. I think I'm going to be buying another chrono! As near as I can tell, 80 grains of H1000 with a 210 primer and 215 hybrid exceeds 3100'. This is a fairly stiff load but it did shoot a 1/4" group. I spent the rest of the day prepping cases. The Hornady brass seems to be fairly consistent. Out of two boxes (40), there wasn't more than 3 grains variation and most were two grains or less. Lengths are quite good after fire forming and most are within .005 or .006". They average approx. 2.583" and my chamber is 2.580" so it is easy to trim everything consistently to 2.575". There is also plenty of brass to work with for neck turning and comes out very well. Once I get my new chrono and get some REAL data, I will start some longer range work with my SXR's.......Rich
