Need some guidance..

There will be pictures posted of the hunt - this I can promise you. I better shoot something on day 1 tho, cuz I am guessing hiking in skinny jeans is going to be a PITA
Hahaha... This is gonna make my day!! Are you going to wear a short T-Shirt and tie the front into a knot? :p

Hah! I was going to post my .02, but I'm frightened of where this thread is going. I've done a fair amount of elk hunting in runners, but never Converse!

Haha, one day I'll get them all digitized. You probably wouldn't be able to tell from a pic though.

Learned from an old timer; they're called 'sneakers' for a reason. Also they dry quickly when crossing creeks and streams. Definitely a fashion faux-pas though :D

I'm actually thinking 300RUM now
There are a lot of "Great Writers" like Chuck Hawks who would tell you that the .300 Rum and other rounds with similar case sizes are totally unnecessary and extreme overkill for any NA game.

Most of them have apparently done very little actual hunting however or they are guys who make perfect shots every time on every animal with whatever they are shooting and certainly have little or no actual experience when it comes to LR hunting.

The .300wm and wsm are more than adequate for any game in NA but the added energy and flatter shooting of the Rum gives you a margin of error and range the other two simply cannot compete with.

The Rum isn't a gun you're likely to enjoy shooting a hundred rounds out of on a trip to the range but you'll certainly appreciate it the first time you pull the trigger on a large/heavy bodied animal at 500 yards or more.

Guy I know the 300rum his go to, high mtn muley hunter, and shoots them close if he can but alot are across finger ridges and in thick alder patches. His boy started shooting game with same rifle last season at 10,that kid has a couple bucks, cow and nice bull, bear under his belt at 11.Father has eleven wolfs under that set up also.

300 ultra mag, 28 Nosler, 300 wm, 7mm RM - that would be where I would start. I have been shooting a 270 wsm the last few years and it has been awesome - I just wanted a lighter mountain gun than my 300 rum.
I just got my 28 Nosler out of the shop and it shoot awesome.
I was back in Colorado in 2017 and got an elk at 469 and an antelope at 275 with my 7mm RUM. I use the 150gr Nosler E-Tip. I shot both prone with a radial brake. I have never got the blow back (buck fever going on probably) on any kill with my RUM at a prone shot. I have got it shooting targets in my bavk yard.
You need to shoot what ever is confortable to you. I am no fan of the 6.5 but they kill elk. The 270 dpes as well as the 243. It all depends on how confident you are with your abilities. I always caught crap from the people I hunted around/with for only using a 7mm cal. But there were years I came back to camp with dead animal. Some years when a few people got lucky I had better shot placment and a further distance.
But DO listen to these people on here! They are full of very useful information! Good luck in utah! What part are you moving to?

I'll be living in Saratoga Springs. But I'm willing to travel to put some meat in the freezer.

Yes sir. Now I need to stalk the classifieds on here to see what I can find.
Gunbroker has some good deals sometimes. I bought a rem 700 action on there last year for a RUM long action since I was going to be building a 28 nosler. Then I got my barrel from Mcgowen. The give vets a 10% discount and they also had a 4th of july 10% off as well so i got a great barrel for a great price. A local gunsmith put it together for me. And I put it in a Magpul Hunter 700 stock. Now i just need to paint it.

I will be moving to Utah from Oklahoma in March. I definitely will be getting into Elk hunting and I was told to go with a 6.5 Creedmore. My main goal is primarily to hunt Elk and do some long range shooting at a range with yardage up to 2,000yds. I was also contemplating building a 300WM and putting a good muzzle brake on it to help with recoil. With me being new to Elk hunting I told the gentleman I don't plan on shooting past 400-500yds. I'm just concerned with penetration with the 6.5 Creedmore on a large animal. Also, what would you guy's recommend for a good muzzle brake? Thanks for any input gentlemen.
The 30 cal I feel is the better choice, hands down ! More energy, more bullet selection, will kill farther and with the 300WM you can make them shoot like other 30 cals buy canging loads and bullets ! The 30 cal will also buck the wind farther down range !

There is some good hunting to your west and northwest.
If you have issues getting a tag there you arent far from the grand junction area were there are some good elk herds. 2nd and 3rd season are over the counter tags in most all of that area. SW colorado where I hunt has been having a dwindling elk herd over the past 10-15 years apparently but I think there is still good hunting there. I always hunted the 1st either sex hunt which was a draw only. But now you have to choose bull or cow. But the second season bull hunt is good up there.
