My perfect Wyoming Mountain rifle build thread

Nice going ! Hopefully you can pick up some speed when that stubby barrel breaks in, try shooting that 215 load after you have ~150 rounds and see what speed it runs at.
Right?!? I mean, if it doesn't pick up any speed, then going with this short 20" barrel just didn't make any sense. 205's and 215's at 3000 fps? It's pretty much just a .308 winchester at this point....... 😉

Well, my impatience is getting to me. Did a load work up with the 205 Badlands SBDII's and H1000......

Also, it seems to like 7-10 ha ha. I would say my last shot, #10, was just starting to get to the upper end of pressure, still not as hot as my top 215 berger load, but close.

That's a serious combo right there. Thanks for advancing the workup on those :)

You bet, I think I'm gonna load up 5 at 83.5 grains and see how they group. If they shoot good, I'll load up a few more and go strait to 600 yards, then 1000+. That part probably won't be until next week though....excited to see how close the .402 G7 is

Awesome. Right with you. I think in your velocity range they are an excellent choice. Maybe not the best all-around choice for my 7 Allen where they are launching too fast... I'm thinking of a 300 NMI and running these unless it's going to push them too fast. Any idea on the MV gain from 30N to 300NMI?

Seating depth test completed with the 205 SBDII's. I went with a lighter charge just to use less components, make sure I don't run into pressure issues, and also check out a lower node around 2830 fps. Started at .010" off, and went out to .115" off in .015" jumps, 81.2 grains of H1000. Range was 125 yards. Here is what I found -

.010" - 2829/2819
.025" - 2812/2828
.040" - 2809/2799
.055" - 2803/didn't read
.070" - 2800/2817
.085" - forgot to turn on/2798
.100" - 2781/2807
.115" - 2804/2796

Groups -

Seems like they shot decent at .025" off and in, and also seemed to shoot good at .085" - .100" off. Also, pressures dropped and then seemed to stabilize from .040" and further out, I have pretty consistently seen this, so I think it will be happier further off the lands, plus starting at .085" off, it just starts to fit in the magazines, as .085" jump is 3.745" OAL. So, I loaded up some rounds for groups at .100" off, these will have .020-.030" clearance in my mags, and shooting them now, will post the update this evening.....

Ok, shot some 3 shot groups. Started at 81.7, to try to hit the velocity node around 2830, then went up to 82.5 and up to hit the higher nodes.

81.7 - 2817/2817/2797
82.5 - 2835/2839/2843
83.0 - 2870/2867/2868
83.5 - 2918/2919/2889
84.0 - 2928/2807/2906
84.5 - 2939/2917/2937

It's really too bad groups started coming apart after 82.5, because 83.0 had awesome e.s. ha ha, so now I have a couple choices, and I think I'll ask the people in the room.....

Should I try to tweak seating depth of 82.5-83 grain range and see if I can get good accuracy there, or should I work around the 81.5-82.5 range where it is already shooting decent? I may try switching to CCI 250's to see if that helps, but I only have a couple hundred of those.....

Thoughts?

I don't think I'd be satisfied without at least trying the 250's to cross that off the list, but I'm an OCD type, lol. Looks like definite potential anyway. 👍

Maybe I'll do that, just to see what happens, with like 82.5 grains? I kinda wanna get a load figured out in the next couple days.....doe/fawn pronghorn open next Monday, and I want to test these 205's out on a doe to see expansion!

I tried the 205 SBD2s in my 30 Nos and eventually gave up on them.
Accuracy was decent but never great, and I had a lot of vertical when I took it to 1k.
Also they pressured out just a hair faster than the 220 LRHT which surprised me.
You're getting awesome velocity from that 20" barrel though!

Ya, they seem similar to the 215 Bergers, they might hit pressure a little before them velocity wise? But not terrible. They have a significantly high bc than the 215's, plus I'm curious to see how they perform on game. My lower velocity load was actually half MOA when I measured it, so really not bad.

Well, I have been trying to get the 205 sbdii's to get consistent accuracy, and this is a LPR build, I know it should make bug holes. Just couldn't get them to stay sub MOA, and I'm about 70 bullets in, have 30 left, and speed goat season opens today. So this morning I threw together a few loads with 208 LRHT's, just guessed on powder charge of H1000 based on my 215 work up with retumbo, seated them .010" off, and sent em.

Talk about the easy button.....feel kinda dumb for not loading these sooner, but I really wanted the 205's to work! I may return to them later on, but I gotta get some blood on this gun!! These groups were shot at 250 yards......

I would say 86 is max, started to see small ejector marks. This is more what I was hoping for.....and this is without any workup or tuning. Once I have more time, I'll see if I can get it tuned up and tighten them groups up a little 🤣 this thing is awesome. Pretty sure I'm gonna run 85.5, quarter MOA, and. A 208 @ 2975 should get the job done......
