Must use 30 cal for moose

30-06 gotta do it
My father owned and hunted with a Browning Safari grade rifle in 30.06. When he passed I inherited it and planned a moose hunting trip. I was concerned if the .06 was enough to do the job. The outfitter that I hired assured me it was plenty, and pointed out his clients have killed hundreds of moose with an .06. He said he has seen plenty of guys with much larger cartridges but were afraid of them and thats when the problem begin with gut shots.
I shot a 50" bull @ 220 yards 3x in the vitals and he just tipped over dead.

The math never lies lol!!!
I harvested this bull with 300 rum and 200 accubonds. The shot was 450 yards.

my 300 RUM comment was in agreement that the 300 RUM works extremely well on moose and validation from my personal experience

and I'm not necessarily looking for + or - on the power scale, just something new & different, in both .... cartridge and bullet

I'm always trying new bullets on moose and this past season stomped a bull with my 300 LRC using a Badlands 205 gr Super Bulldozer 2 bullet and watched my brother dump a bull with my 300 RUM using my handloads with the new Federal 175 Ascent bulllet , both bullet/cartridge combos worked extremely well on a couple nice bulls

I'm hoping the new Barnes 208 gr LRX will be out and available before moose season, apparently they have redesigned the bullet for higher bc's and to open up at even longer distances/slower velocities, BUT require an 8 tw barrel for optimum results, so that kind of leaves my factory barreled rifles in 7.82 Warbird, 30-378 WBY, 300 RUM, 300 WBY, 300 Win Mag, 300 WSM, 30-06, 308 Win and 30-30 out of the hunt.... unless rebarreled with a proper twist barrel... but if I'm rebarreling a rifle with a high grade Rock or Bartlein I can't bring myself to do a factory chambering, it always ends up with a wildcat chamber, just the way things work in my world

just brainstorming and scheming on a thirty, thirsty for blood

If you want something New & Different then try the 6.8 Western.

Nobody mentioned the 30.06!

A versatile cartridge that is commonly loaded for 90 gr to 120 gr bullets, loaded in a range of velocities & energies, and extended beyond that range by som hand-loaders. That should cover any species you'll find in the western hemisphere. Unless you are interested in a round dedicated to moose hunting you should consider the 30.06.

what do these numbers mean ?
these numbers tell me that I have 152 days until moose season and I have to use a 30 caliber cartridge to hunt moose with

Don't believe me ? These maths don't lie ..

152 (days) divided by 6 (the months the days are in) = 25.3333333 + 5 (letters in Moose) = 30.3333333 = 30 and then the seven .3's represent the letters in caliber

30 CALIBER ..... WOW, AMAZING !
I have to hunt moose with a 30 caliber rifle this coming season in 152 days ! the numbers don't lie !!!!

Which 30 caliber cartridge ? That is still a mystery though , but I'm working on solving that riddle, stand by .......

I've killed plenty of canadian moose with my 7mm with 160 gr nosler and 7m. StW with 175 partition but my favorite is my 300 WSM with 180 grain accubond ! All do the job well

Pro- Was that your brother Mark? He still using calibers way over his head? Lol.

Havent seen Mark in over 20 years.....since we fished cod out of Kodiak on the same boat. Loved working with him.

Mark still has his 7.82 Warbird, 30-378 Wby and 8mm Rem Mag but not him on this shoot, it was the older punk

The 175 gr Ascent bullet impressed the hell outta me, it plowed through both shoulders and was caught in the hide poking out, at 99 paces after leaving the muzzle at just over 3300 fps from the 300 RUM it still retained a lot of it's weight, unfortunately I broke the mushroom with my buck knife trying to dig out the gunk in the bullet to get a real weight, should have boiled it instead of prying on it

All in all I was pretty satisfied with the results of the 175 gr Ascent at high velocity close in at 100 yards, plus or minus a couple yards as I simply counted my steps when walking up to it after he shot it,

after bullet impact we witnessed what I call "the guillotine effect" no steps taken, straight down with a couple twitches and all was still .... I am 100% convinced the bull doesn't know he died , lol

sure am glad I bought 500 bullets before they sold out of the first run, no telling when they will re-appear

Have you used that .300 VODKA cartridge you told us about on anything get? Use a mountain rifle with a 16 inch barrel. That way if you miss the moose the flash and blast will have still blinded and stunned the beast and set it's fur
ablaze for easy identification of which animal you shot at in the future.
