Cool Story and help ID'ing a barrel

Papa was a southpaw.
The stock has a Savage brand butt-plate on it, but maybe it's just the plate and not the whole stock. The LoP is really short, but it's still comfortable.
Methinks it's obvious that he pieced this thing together, but the "what/why" I may never know. That's part of the "cool" factor with this one of a kind heirloom rifle.
A lot of people used the Mauser actions back in the day to build wildcat rifles/rounds. They were cheap and affordable. Now some are really worth a few dollars. lol I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't cut the stock to fit him. And just added the butt plate.

Great Story and thanks for sharing.
So it is a version of a 270/308Ai.
Very cool, I built a 27-08, it's Not a Ai.
But one of the funniest rifle I have ever built. The Mauser actions back in the day was one of the Best and smoothest actions, and if a gunsmith new how to Tune it, they were Great.
If I can help you, pm me.
CONGRATULATIONS. 👍

Thanks Brother!
I would have called it Ackley Improved as well, but Papa also reamed the chamber to have the more dramatic body taper of a 7x57 instead of leaving the parent 308 taper.
Now, I might be wrong in my assumption, but I thought P.O. Ackley only changed the shoulder angle by lengthening the body.
