Krylon matte to cover a shiny finish

I'd probably use the 0000 steel wool or fine sandpaper, but actually tape off the checkering. I don't think you'll notice the gloss there, and you don't want to sand it down.

You might try a bit of lacquer thinner or acetone on a flat area as a test. If that dulls it down, wiping it on the checkering might work. If it doesn't, no loss.

You could try a Mossy Oak Gun wrap. These are very well made and fit well. Also protect the stock from scratches and dings. Had one on a McMillan and loved it. This way you can keep the factory original finish like new If you ever wanted to sell it. Hard to tell it's a wrap, even while your holding it. Here's a pic of mine and a link to Mossy Oak.

I've got that on my Ruger American 450BM and my Rem 11-87 turkey shotgun. They work great.
Watch where you put the seams when you wrap it, and you'll never feel one when you're using the rifle.
