What is long range hunting and what is hunted?

He has the scope and range finder combo point the range finder at the elk and it then dials in the scope to the exact range without having to raise your crosshairs or dial turrets, I know nothing about it other than what he has told me, most all of my elk I have killed here in Washington State have been under 100 yards, This is illegal in Washington State, so I will deffinetley need practice to get good for sure.
I'm curious, what is illegal in WA state ?

Well I called about it I guess range finding scopes are legal you just can't use a laser guided scope? I had looked into it before and read that you you couldn't use scopes with electronics in Washington State. Who knows maybe 15 years ago they were not allowed and now they are? Not sure

Your Elk, are they Roosevelt or Rocky Mountain? The Elk i took with a Rem Model 7 on Raspberry Island were all Roosevelt. Never hunted Rocky Mountain Elk. Sounds like folks find them much harder to stalk.

Rocky mountain elk, they can be hard to hunt or seems easy sometimes, snow always helps, when hunters leave the weekend warriors the elk come back out, then just staraight up luck, I saw elk everday this past hunting season, some 10 feet away from me, I shot and missed at a spike bull as it is spike bull only where I hunt it was about 40 yards away still don't know how I missed just to freaking excited plus it had been about three years since my last elk, I will be ready next year hoping my father in law gets drawn for a cow tag plus I have a lot of branch antlered bull points so hopefully I will get drawn at some point.

Now since I'm Old School Military Trained, we used to have to qualify at 200 yards shooting Offhand Standing, Kneeling, Sitting, then prone. After 200 yards all the qualification shots were from the prone position. So would any shot hunting Standing, Kneeling, or Sitting over 200 yards be considered long range? What about handgun hunting from the Creedmoor Position. Does long range hunting distances change when you change from stalk hunting to ambush hunting?

So when does hunting become Long Range Shooting? I know well what my Extreme Long Range abilities are, but when does the shooting resolution overtake the ability to stalk closer? Of course this leads to the I know I can make that shot over 90% of the time, but should I take that shot or stalk a bit more?

Only you can answer that for you.

I once killed a jackrabbit off hand with a Freedom Arms .454 at 206 long steps. Since I had to aim a jack and a half above, I figured that was long range. That was thirty years ago. I wouldn't try that shot with a rifle now. Sitting? Maybe. Prone? Positively.

If that's long range to you, then you must answer that question for yourself.

If that's the case, why does everyone try to answer that for others on forums like LRH? 🤔

I like to stalk. What happens if I shoot game at 200 with a rifle that is capable of much greater distance? 🤔
Now a 200 yard shot with a 30-30 requires a bit more dope than a 200 yard shot with a .308 Win, yet 200 yards is the outer edge of my abilities while Standing unsupported. So a 200 yard Unsupported shot standing would still be considered Long Range to me with either cartridge. Even though I shoot a .308 Win from the prone position at the 1000 yard range successfully. I don't even shoot paper at over 200 yards with a 30-30. To me, the 30-30 is at the end of it's humane kinetic energy level at 200 yards, so that would be the maximum distance even for a prone shot with the 30-30. For my Mini-30 (7.62 X 39) I consider it's maximum yardage to be 150 yards on a game animal., yet I routinely shoot paper at ,200 yards while Standing, and 300 yards from prone. Guess that would place 200 yard shots in the Long Range Category for me, and shots out to 1000 yards in the Extra Long Range category with a .308 Win.

Perhaps newer projectiles would stretch the distance considered long range. Example- i use Nosler Partitions on dangerous Game. Nosler states that the Partition should arrive at target distance @ 1800 fps or more for maximum performance. Using the at sea level sub zero temperature usually on the ice pack, my beloved 9.3 x 62 couldn't deliver the Partition Projectile @ 1800 fps out to 300 yards. Only the 300 & 338 Win Mags could deliver velocities over 1800 fps at 300 yards under those conditions. Thus, 300 yards became to long a range for the 9..3 x 62. Yet with newer projectiles?
