The only problem with the "balance of nature" theory is it doesn't exist in nature. Nature is an excersize in extremism with habitats and populations moving from one extreme to another. Usually this move occurs over a human lifetime or more unless propelled by a catastrophic event. If you are lucky, a human gets to observe a population or ecosystem in balance (a human concept) which in the case of animal populations will occur over approximately 20-100 years, on its inexorable march to one extreme or another (a continuum).

The only problem is your basing it all on the balance of nature . Nature now includes sheep and cattle , throw in some chickens and a dog or two
And you can see the the never ending supply of food for the wolves will not let their numbers decrease and will have the population explode. Up in the far north yes the population is held in check with natural food sources, the lower 48 is a much more food enriched environment . Man is the only wolf predator of any consequence ! This source of easy food compounds the stress on the game population as well because you have a strong predator with healthy numbers attacking the elk and deer population relentlessly. The number of pups surviving in wolf packs are because the ranchers unwilling are subsidizing the available food. Your natural theory is somewhat misguided , I'm scared yes I am fearful that this reintroduction of wolves has doomed the western game population worse than ever before because the wolf population is only going up and they are not going to stop killing the elk and deer! Let's not even forget what they are doing to the ranchers. This is a disgrace !

Not really. Sounds good though.

Nature is an exercise in extremism with habitats and populations moving from one extreme to another.

Always has. Problem is too many people confuse longevity with immortality and then apply it to biological systems. Most often it is those events that occur once or twice in a lifetime that have the greatest impacts on biological systems.

This post makes absolute sense. Very well put and should be quoted at every big game meeting held by a wildlife organization or federal /state dept that has anything to do with predator reintroduction. We live in a different world than when the wolf roamed coast to coast !

In case you missed it we were talking about Wildlife , so unless you're into Darwinism and think your still an Ape ....

Thanks I like my Avatar too ...
RUMMY has a very valid point especially when we are talking about wildlife and any consumptive pursuit. Humans perform as an apex predator and should not be excluded from the circle. One of the biggest faults of the environmentalists is thinking in terms of eliminating the presence or even the existence of human influence in ecosystems. Mankind has his fingerprint on everything for better or worse.

That right there is why we are in this problem, people think that is natural, there are two prey species on your little picture and five predator, that is a nightmare of a circle that is leading us to the current state of affairs.
