In the Ear? Really???

djfour_zpskncsnhax.jpg

killing has been pretty good lately. lots of hogs out tonight. i left at least three in the field that i couldn't find. the thermal is nothing short of spectacular, but with a 3x obj, it's not much good for finding dead ones in milo.

snox,
the 308 is an old style dpms lr308t. the only thing i don't like is the rail is extra high and no railed handguards will fit flush. i'd like more rail space from a different hand guard, but i'd have to get a different upper if i wanted it to line up.

i've been very tempted to put a 6.5 creed barrel on my spare upper. i have a bolt action and like it a lot. only thing is i really like the 16" barrel, especially after i put a can on it. at that length i'm not sure it would offer much over 6.5 grendel.

The barrel length is exactly what I'm trying to narrow down. Especially if they pass the sharing protection act. I really don't feel like buying a can and having to wait a year to get it when I can't use it that often up here.

snox have you considered the 30AR? It's a 300 Savage as far as ballistics but in an AR size rifle. But it weighs the same as a GII.

I have looked at me that. I have lots of ar 15s looking to get into a ar 10. I'm thinking 6.5 creed. But then I'm also looking at a Noreen 300 win mag for a full size at.
Dj what is the average distance you shoot at down that way?

Also forgot to ask. My Florida pig porkin adventure is this January. The new place the guide has has water buffalo also. I'm thinking I'm gonna take one this year. Only problem is I can't narrow it down to what rifle. I'm a big shotgun 20 gauge guy. So I was thinking my HR 20 with accutips. But I've really been enjoying my ars lately so I'm thinking 458 socom with the 300 gr cutting edge raptor. Thought I had it down to those two. But now I'm getting such good performance from these raptors I'm almost tempted to see what my 300 blk will do with normal shot placement with the 100 gr raptors moving 2550 fps. I think I'd have plenty. I would be more of a bullet test if I did it that way with a socom for backup. What do you guy think.

i'm only shooting the dpms 308 at night with modest magnification, so shots are mostly 50 to 250 yards. of course i shoot at hogs until they are out of sight but rarely hit them on the run past that.

the 6.5 creed is my most accurate bolt gun. i'm not sure how far i've killed with it, but i know i've taken several hogs well past 500 yards. if your rifle is up to it, i think right load can stay super sonic to around 1,000 yards??? however when ranges get past 800 yards the 338 lapua usually gets the nod.

I can't tell if you have a 458 yet or not from your post. I don't have a 458 Socom but I do have a 450 Bushmaster. I've used it to take a number of hogs. They don't run far if they run. I thought about getting the 458, but chose the 450 due to ammo availability. I live in a small town, but there are two stores that carry the 450 ammo. I go to every gun store I can find, but I've never seen a loaded round of 458. Not sure if you reload or not, so it may not be an issue for you.

Ya I have had one for three years now. I reload all my rounds mainly cause I can't get the bullets I want. I'm loading the 300gr raptors and getting 2180fps out of them. Also the 258 gr. Raptors to 2260. I'm leaning toward the 300 gr cause I never shoot it past 50 yards so I have plenty of velocity to make the bullet work. And as with the 450 everything I've hit goes right down. It's a beast. I actually couldn't catch a bullet from it till I filled a 55 gallon drum full of water set it on its side and moved back to 125 yards and finally caught it bullet base was in there along with all the petals. Crazy to think it was blowing length ways through deer.

Sounds like fun! I'd be interested in getting one, since I reload, but I haven't seen one yet.

How's the recoil?

Recoil is very close to your 450. Many of my friends have the 450 and I wanted something different with a bit more power and bullet choice. Now I want a 450 cause it's legal in our shotgun zone which I live and my 458 is not. I will say now that Remington loads the accutips in the 450 I will more than likely get one. I shoot that bullet in my 20 and it's amazing for a slug perfect expansion and penetration every time. FYI I saw radical firearms is now offering 458 uppers for $400 I think. I ordered one of there 300 blk just cause it was cheap. When its received I will give a full report on if it's worth anything.

What if your 450 gets dirty? Can't take out a dirty gun. Hell in running out of ideas for guns. Then decided on a 6.5 creedmore. Gonna do a ruger percision and an ar10. Was gonna build one in bolt action but that new ruger looks spot on.

Packrat,

I went to lunch the other day with my daughter. She always orders the chicken bog with potato salad and mac-n-cheese when we go to Wholly Smoking BBQ. I think you might reconsider trying it if you ever make it down this way.
