Hammer Hunter in 270?

placed my order. Looking forward to see what develops.
Thanks Steve,
Buzz

Hey Buzz,

I've been following this thread and curious to see your reloading turned out with the hammer bullets in your 6.5? That's a nice looking gun set up with the tripod and all. Nice looking 270 too. If you haven't figured it out already you know me from the Hammer website where I posted about my 28 Nosler. I followed this thread as I'm thinking to get either some 133 gn sledge hammers or the lighter (I think 116 gr?), hammer hunters for my Winchester 270 WSM. I suspect Steve would suggest the ligher hammer hunter as I know he likes the higher velocity potential of the ligher hunters. My 270 is just a 10 twist 24" barrel.

roughwater, do a little playing around with the 133s vs 117s on a ballistic calc. depending on what range limit you set and the animal your chasing, you might be surprised. (or you might not be lol)

bhylton,

Without checking ballistics I would estimate the 117's would be superior at most if not all distances ballistically since muzzle velocity and BC both would be better? But in considering hunting ELK I'm wodering if the heavier round would be better?

100yd Zero

117gr @3400fps
400 19in drop 2440 fps
600 60in drop 2022 fps
--------------------------------------------------
133gr @3200fps
400 23in drop 2230fps
600 71in drop 1822fps

4 inches of wind difference at 600yds with 10mph wind.

the 117gr has a 200fps velocity advantage at these ranges, windage is negligible. Its my understanding that both rounds will perform at these impact velocities. I chose the 133 because its designed for normal hunting ranges which fits me better and i got a warm fuzzy shooting a 133gr vs a 117gr.

Either can be argued for. I have watched the 117g kill quite a few animals with great results. The Sledge Hammers simply hit hard. Nothing scientific about it, just observation on game. The Sledge Hammers are exactly what we designed them to be. The perfect normal range hunting bullet.
