Kimber 8400 Montana, .270 wsm, 1:10", Norma brass, fed 215gm primers, just got my hammers And start antelope hunting on 8.22.

looking for a start load with h4831sc and h1000. I just want to make sure I'm not gonna blow myself up. Searched and searched but Barnes doesn't list these powders for the 120g bullets in .270wsm.

From what I can extrapolate, starting load for h1000 is 67-69 grains? That seems like a lot. As opposed to h4831sc, starting loads look to be around 60-61 grains.

If anyone has input please let me know. This is my first time in mono-metals but I can't ignore 117 @3400+. Have a 140 accubond load to fall back on too if need be.

@RockyMtnMT -FYI

I'd look more at Nosler data for a starting point, but the trick is they only list a 110 and 130 gr bullet.

With H4831sc I'd split the difference between the listed starting charge for the 110gr bullet and the 130gr bullet. Looking at what Nosler has listed, I'd start at 65.0gr and work up from there. Running numbers through Quickload gave me the same results.

I think H1000 is really too slow for a 117gr bullet. I bet you'll run out of case capacity before you hit decent velocity.

Sweet, you're a little more bold than I, I'll probably start at 63 of 4831sc. Hope to get some more data tomorrow.

140 accubonds look to have a good node at 2880-2900 and shot little clover groups but I don't feel that is taking advantage of the cartridge.

Those hammers don't have much bearing surface so pressure is generally lower than other monos. I'm not familiar with the .270wsm though I've always wanted one.

I have a box of the 117gr Hammers that I've tried in the 270 AR wildcat (think 27 Dasher), 270 Win, 270 WSM and a large 270 wildcat with a 110gr + case capacity, so I'm getting a pretty good feel for how that bullet (and a fair number of other Hammers) behave. Nosler data has been very close for the same weight Hammer bullet when run through Quickload and actual tests.

Norma brass, fed 215gm,
H4831sc and 117 hammer hunters:
9 rounds, .5 g apart
63.5- 3153
67.5- 3337

I did run into a flat spot at 66-66.5 running 3275-3283. I will probably load up there and then again at the top to see if there is anything worth chasing at max. Group was maybe 1.5" across all 9 shots, it did seem to string vertically but I can't say I gave my best effort for groups either. I may be able to push it a little harder, but not sure if I am going to.

Also ran h1000, loaded one at 69 grains, definitely touching powder when seating the bullet, got 3244 FPS on that one. So, as mentioned above, h1000 isn't going to give me what I want with the hammers.

Now the 140 accubonds did impress. 5 shots at 66.5 g h1000 gave me an avg velocity of 3072 and an ES of 12, again little clover group. If nothing else this looks to be a good load and I know accubonds will kill.

Call the owner of Hammer bullets , the 270 wsm is Great , enjoy it's performance ,mines 114 Savage American Classic , save them Accubombs for practice .

So I've got a load giving me 3300 FPS from a 117 hammer hunter with 66.5 g h4831sc fed gm215 primers and Norma brass. I am jumping them slightly more that .020", that's where I started and I have not seen any reason to change. Average has been just below 3300 but ES over 2 days, a week apart, was less than 30. SD on each day was single digit over 6 rounds. Picture is attached of a 100 yard, 3 shot group. There are 3 more .270 holes that string vertically, that was adjusting the scope after the cold bore group shot low.

I took them out to 400 Saturday, I will shoot to 650 or even 800 next weekend to verify one more time. I probably won't shoot anything past low 600's.

I look forward to putting them on hair in the coming months.
