Brakes vs recoil

Hey guys just got the edge back this evening all i got to say is daaaammmmnn. That brake is the best thing since sliced bread its unreal how much recoil it took out. I was shooting 300gr smk's and 92 gr. of H-1000 and it recoiled less than my old 300 um with the quick discharge brake shooting 210 bergers with 93.5gr of H-1000. The accuracy wasnt what i was wanting but that was just the first load i tried. I used both Fed gold medal match and cci 250's with a oal of 3.780. My action screws are set at 45in lbs do yall think that is ok or should it be more.

Thanks for everything fella's

That's good news on the break...good news indeed.

As relates to the action screws, 45 in lbs is standard. Some will go as high as 65 in lbs in a composite stock with the correct bottom metal; however, you mentioned that Darrell worked on the recoil lug on this rifle....so he would have removed the action and reset it himself to what he felt was the proper torque. But I'll let the other folks chime in on this with their thoughts.

Keep playing with the H-1000...I'll bet you will find a load combo that the rifle likes. :D

Nathan,

I guess I can take your "rifle" money out of escrow. Doesn't sound as if you are going to be selling anytime soon.

It is a pretty awesome brake. I have two of them myself.
They work so good, it is hard to believe.

Hey Nathan,

What was the difference in volume? Some brakes are crazy loud.

Honestly i think it is quieter, of course i have ear plugs in but it does seem to be quieter to me but it could have been becouse i was in ahh of how well the brake worked.

I hope to shoot alittle this evening but right now the wind is blowing around 20mph or so. if i didnt know better i would think i lived in kansas rather than western ky, the wind hasnt stopped blowing here for at least 3 months its starting to annoy me if you know what i mean.

Thanks
Nathan

Glad it worked out for you Nathan.

Just a thought.....

If he changed the recoil lug, or machined on it, you may have to re-bed so that there is proper contact and clearance in that area...

Hey Joel he said it was the same size as the other, his reason for replacing it was he said the recoil lug was bored to large for the barrel tenon, i had nooooo idea what that meant but i knew he knew what he was doing so i didnt even begin to question him.

When i put the barreled action into the stock it wasnt binding anywhere and it had just alittle play around the lug itself.

One more question on loading is the oal of 3.785 just a good starting point or is that pretty much the go to seating depth.

Thanks everybody

Hey guys finally got a chance to shoot this evening. Had pretty good results with 93gr of 1000 and fed gold medal match, shot .75 three shot group at 200 now i will try to play with the bullet depth alittle and see if i can improve on that. The speed wasnt as much as i was wanting it had a really good spread though 1st shot was 2768 2nd was 2766 3rd was 2770. I was hoping to get around 2850 i guess i could load it alittle hotter and see if the accuracy stays.

After reading kirbys comment on pressure signs i am alittle scared to load much hotter. It didnt show any signs of pressure at all but the way he talked, on a true action and lugs it want show the signs of pressure on the case like a factory rifle would.

Do any of yall think it would be ok to load another grain or two hotter. Or should i just leave it there.

Thanks fella's
Nathan

That's not bad at all. I got 2830 at the high end of a 93g load, but I didn't see any pressure signs.

You said you didn't see any signs of pressure: Sticky bolt lift, any pierced primers or any other signs? If you didn't, I would bump it up another 0.25 to 0.5 and keep working on your load. However, remember that faster is not always the most accurate. Also remember your time of year and weather conditions...in relation to your chrono data.

Take care,

TXLR
