Best pack for mountain hunting

If you're going to pack meat...I recommend an external framed pack.

I agree. I use a kind of cheap Alps Commander Lite. It has a pack that detaches from the frame so you can haul meat and then re-attach your pack on top. I haven't packed meat with it, and I don't currently plan to pack overnight, but that could change. I'd like to get a Kuiui but not in the budget at the moment.

I first had an archery day pack designed for a tree stand, but wanted an external frame, so I gave the day pack to him, and got the Commander Lite. It has 2850 cu in the pack, and you could pack out as much weight as one can tolerate. I have seen guys packing out 200 lbs, but I'm not that person.

My pack is about 40-50 lbs when I leave...that's with about a liter and a half of water. I call ice tea water. For a long day I would feel more comfortable with twice that much water. ;) My son is a lot stronger than me, so I figure with both of us we can pack a fair amount of meat. Even if I pack the meat and he takes the pack, strap it on his pack and away we go...

Be careful though, when I first got the archery pack, I tested with 40 lbs of weights. They were not tied up very high and created a diaper effect. After a few miles my back was messed up for about a week. Another lesson learned...keep the weight up as high as possible, especially when packing game!
