Best Budget Custom Action Currently

The OP asked for actions less than 1k. I am curious as to where I can get a Bighorn, an ARC Nucleus, and a lot of the others that list for hundreds over that price for 1k?

This is where I ordered mine from and I'm in Australia

I have one. It's a nice action that's made for Shilen by Stiller. The bad thing is since it uses the Savage style "floating bolt head" design,it's not as smooth as other custom actions.
I also have an ARC Nucleus action. It is smooth, controlled feed,Mauser style extractor. I really like this action. There have been some guy's complaining about having light primer strikes with this action with the original 16# spring. Mine was the 12th Nucleus made, and I haven't had a single issue with mine, and I only shoot handloads out of my guns.

Thank you!

I have one origin it is a wonderful action...i will order another for my PRS build--easy to fit barrels and the actions are slick...if you want to change to a 223 or magnum--it's a bolt head away.

Right now I have 4 rifles with custom actions. A Curtis...A Surgeon..A Lonepeak Fuzion
And a Defiance Rebel? Everyone of them work fine and I really don't have a favorite?
My next build will have a Bat! They have a solid reputation and I don't have one ..Yet!

Anyone try the Shilen DGR? It's pushing the OP's budget, but I've been interested in a switch barrel rifle I can do bolt head swaps on.

I have a DGR. Good action. My 6.5 Creedmoor built on this action routinely shoots in the .3s and .4s with it's favorite loads and often will put five into the .2s.

another vote for the TL/APR. TL makes the actions for APR and they are very nice. I have a 338RUM built on the LA magnum hunter action, and it's very solid. The price is great and the guys that make them stand behind the product 100%

I would use the Defiance Tenacity or a Kelbly Atlas, several of the actions mentioned like the Mausingfeild use way to light of springs so they feel good because their geometry sucks, the Bighorn is also disappointing.

If I may ask what is the issue/ issues you have with big horn ?
Mine went together with absolutely no problems at all it cycles smooth as silk the floating boat head is a joy to use imo
Cheers Paul

I was wondering the same thing. I've heard nothing but good from the Bighorn Actions.

There are some actions out there that are/were using firing pin springs that were too light and they had problems with light primer hits. The light springs are used to keep the bolt lift effort lower when using a shorter bolt throw.

The Nucleus action originally shipped with a 16# spring and had severe reliability issues. Then a 19# spring was offered as a replacement, but still didn't fix the issue 100%. Now there's a 22# spring that's supposed to fix all the issues, but increases the bolt lift significantly.

My Nucleus action shipped with a 16# spring and I swapped it out for a 19# before even throwing a barrel on there and I haven't had any issues with light strikes and the bolt lift is very smooth and light.

Looking at doing a custom in 6.5x47L and would like to go full custom, but would like to keep the action cost at $1K or less. Also, for ease, would like to stay with an action, in the Rem 700 footprint.

Who makes the best one, in that range, and who has the best prices?
Bighorn Origin. control round or push feed.

C

The Origin is controlled round feed.

They call it controlled round feed, Winchester called the exact same thing a controlled round push feed. I tend to side with Winchester on this one and call it controlled round push feed.

The Defiance Tenacity is very hard to beat for a well made, well designed action with good ignition, under $1k.
