Best action for a budget minded 338 Norma Mag

Weatherby, in the 30-378 case size class, it would get you an action, stock, bottom metal, and trigger. It would just be a rebarrel situation.
Sense.

The Mark V in any 30-378, 338-378, 378, 416 or 460 can easily become a 338 Norma Mag and do it better than any other action. Plenty of room for mag feed. One of the strongest if not the strongest action for it's size. Everything available for a R700 foot print custom is available for the Mark V.

Oh, an additional note on Mark V actions. They are all long actions, a little machining and change the mag box and capable of 3.892" cartridges or really close I keep forgetting and remeasuring.

A note. 30-378 or 338-378 rifle/donor will run 800 to 1200. Regular magnum will run 600 to 1000. Parts to convert a regular mag to Lapua/Norma/378 are about $200. Smithing should not exceed $200 so the price is the same.

Then barrel fitting, maybe a brake and good to go.

Wait, what am I saying. If you buy a Mark V that's one less for me. Scrap everything I said. Get a R700. Really push the pressure. That way there is less competition for Mark Vs.

lol

Hey jfseaman, what work needs to be done to achieve a mag length of 3.892 "?
Do the 339-378 Wby come with this mag length originally, or is any machining and / or aftermarket parts required?

Thanks Larry

I'm running a .338 Lapua on a Remington 700 action. Lapua diameter PTG bolt, full blue print, 27 inch shilen, M40 contour. My smith said there's no issues running a Lapua on a Rem 700. Remington makes / made 4 models of the Lapua on the 700 action. He has a couple of 700 Lapuas that I've shot and they were 1/2 MOA shooters. I would just be smart and load it at safe pressures.

Point is I'm pretty sure a Norma mag would be safe.

What ever floats your boat. Using an R700 does not make anything cheaper. The R700 is definitely "strong enough". Just not my preference. I have put 65k PSI loads in a Mark V and in an R700. I'll take the Mark V any day. There is no such thing as "sticky bolt" in a Mark V. BTW: I credit the ultra strong Weatherby actions on adding to longer brass life. The cases are not allowed to stretch beyond chamber dimensions as much as an R700. Less stretch = longer life. I am running my 338 Edge with 285 ELD-M at 2932fps. Nice and "hot". Up from 2916 with the A-Max. I am on my 6th reload of 120 rounds. Yes I lost 3 cases to loose primer pockets. Those are traced to exceeding max accuracy node with loads over 2950. 2985 to be specific, the 3 test rounds were very hot but not accurate.

Starting from a Remington 700:
Raw donor: $250 to $500
Action blueprinting: $250 to $500
Machining for a Wyatts long magazine or CIP bottom metal: $250 to $500
Stock inletting for a long magazine: $100 to $200

So $850 to $1600 for a ready to go R700 action

"Custom" action on R700 foot print: $1100 to $1600
Stock inletting for a long magazine: $100 to $200
I won't add machining for the Wyatts long mag because some include it

So $1200 to $1700 for a "custom" action

Used Weatherby Mark V donor 30-378 or 338-378 $800 to $1200
There is nothing else to do except set the trigger weight.

without barrel:
R700 Donor $850
Custom $1200
Mark V $850

I know there will be guys who dispute the numbers. Saying things like "My smith trued my action for $50 and it's good enough". Do you live next to @codyadams ? If so, take him out with your Lapua/Norma magnum R700 and a hot load. If @codyadams is happy, take him to your smith for the $50 treatment. No problem. Otherwise you are blowing smoke up someones skirt. I have enough rifles and enough experience to know the difference.

A Mark V, even from 1957 will be within .001 of true. Unless you get an aberration. @MudRunner2005, please don't bring up your 257, it's the only experience like that known here and it is what I meant by an aberration. I am sad you had that experience but is not normal. It is normal for an R700, owners are just used to sending them out to be fixed.

A custom like a Defiant Diviant (I think that is the correct model) will work "better" than an R700 action. Better metallurgy. Still has lots of the same characteristics of the R700.

All of these donors are available right now in the https://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/#free-classifieds-buy-or-sell.14

Perhaps there is an R700 or custom available already done. I know there are R700, Mark V and custom donors available.

BTW: My 1957 German rebarreled to 338 Edge and single feed can hit stuff a very very long way away. I want go to further/faster so I am moving the barrel to the 338-378 Accumark action and rechambering it to 338 Kubla Kahn. Think 338-378 stretched and improved ala, 375 Zane.

@jfseaman wasnt disputing a weatherby at all. Your numbers are pretty close for Rem work. My Smith doesn't do $50 truing Jobs. My point was remington 700s work for Lapuas and Norma's. I've seen it many times. Are there better action designs? Of course. Does that make the Remington 700 action not suitable for a for the Lapua or Norma? Of course not.

Just telling the OP a Remington 700 will work. If he wants my smiths contact I'll gladly give it to him and he'll have a well built "custom" rifle that will shoot .5 MOA.

Thanks for throwing me under the bus in a thread that I previously had less-than zero interest in responding to.

Ya seem to be kinda over thinking it.

I asked you to refrain from you standard "I got burned by Weatherby and I'm never forgiving them" share. That is not throwing you under the bus as it causes you no harm. In some interpretations, having you skip this chance for a jab may help your reputation.

And

Without doubt Weatherby effed up. You did get the short end of the stick. It does not make a Mark V action less strong.

I never said the Mark V was a bad action, they're probably the strongest mass-produced actions available, other than delving into the custom and aftermarket world. I'm just not a fan of how I was treated by them as a company. That's my whole beef.

On that note, the R700 can also be used as well for Lapua/Norma bolt face cartridges. Remington even offers some 700 rifles factory chambered in .338 Lapua.

Either one will work fine for what the OP needs.
