have the gun in getting some work done now. Any suggestions for rings and bases ? Don't know if I really want to put a rail on this one
I've done some Hog Hunting over by DHanisI just joined the forum and thought I should post to the sub forum that led me here.
I recently acquired a used Weatherby Mark V with factory 26" barrel in 7 Wby rechambered to STW. Cleaned it up, replaced the black plastic stock with deluxe wood, bedded and floated. Topped it off with a Swarovski z5.
Now trying to get it to shoot... Factory trigger is inconsistent, usually breaks at around 4 pounds, but every 5 or 6 pulls, at 2 something. Fiddling with that and working up handload with RL26. Factory Nosler giving 1.25" to 1.75" with flakey trigger.
Regards,
Bill
We Hunted on Craig Whites lease just north of Hondo, They were Coors Lite folksDHanis is my old stomping grounds. Got a sh$t ton of pigs, decent deer and plenty of other game... Good people too. Hog killin, sausage and sauerkraut makin, Keystone drinking fools!
With even a half decent brake the recoil with 140's is pretty mild. It's when you move up to the heavies that it becomes significant. Of course the weight of your right has a large effect on how much felt recoil there is. The heavier the rifle the lighter the felt recoil.Well guys I fired my STW for the first time today. I expected some serious recoil but it was actually quite pleasant. I've shot .300 Win Mag before and I have a .338 Win Mag myself, but this gun is nothing like those. It's fitted with a brake so I guess that would make a difference, but I really expected it to be a lot worse.
I was firing Winchester Silvertip 140gr. It's the only factory ammo I've found since buying the rifle. Only downside is it punched a hole in my friend's 10mm AR500 gong... Oops!
Thanks and I will. I'll put up some pictures soonWelcome mt-pockets,that's a good build and start !!! enjoy ...
Welcome. Being a nutt for both the STW and Model 70's I wanna see pcitures!Hi i just joined this site. I have been on this thread a lot in the past and have read through it all at one time but that has been a few years back. Anyway, i decided to have a rifle built and chose the STW partly because of this thread. A lot of folks like this round a bunch! So now i have a Winchester model 70 with :
Krieger #5 contour 1:9 twist @ 26"
Manners EH2
Talley bases and rings
Leupold VX-6HD 3x18x44
Its been a long time since this project started but I'm really looking foreword to getting some use out of this one! Its my first custom rifle and I'm happy I chose the STW. I'll be re-reading the reloading thread too and be getting it dialed in with some handloads soon! Thanks to all on here for sharing your knowledge and helping others.
