6.5 PRC Reloading

Looking for advice.....Getting ready to build a PRC and want as short of a barrel as possible. I plan to load 130 grain bullets in ADG brass with either Retumbo, H1000, or H4831sc. I really want to get to 3200 fps with these light bullets. For those with experience with this round, do you think I can do that with a 22" barrel or do I need to step up to a 24"?

I'm looking to replace my 270 win with this build, my 22" 270 I'm shooting 130 grain bullets at 3150. Just not sure I can do that with the PRC.

Colin, I built mine w/ 24" but still breaking in w/ factory ammo. To me using QuickLoad data, RL26 and VV-N560 are going to produce the faster MV without compressed loads. You should be able to work up to 3100-3150 range on the accuracy node w/ 22". RL26 on the upper end and N560 on the lower.
That's a pretty nice buck for the Hill Country.

Thanks, that was my sons buck from last year.

.130 freebore
24" barrel
143's at .020 jump
55.2 rl26
CCIBR2
3000 FPS

147's at .020 jump
57.5 H1000
210 primer
2975 FPS

I just got some 156 bergers that touch at 3.025 OAL, haven't loaded any yet.
What's your OAL with the Hornady 147's. Just curious. Also I loaded up some H1000 with 57 grains and also getting 2975 averages. But I pushed it up to 60.5 and touching 3150 averages. I'm thinking I need to back that down. Although I see zero pressure signs at this charge. 26" barrel crono 10' from muzzle. Martin

What is your jump with the H1000 @ 57.0gr. Mine likes the same charge. Going to start changing the jump to fine tune.

Anyone shooting a 120 class mono with the PRC? What powder are you having luck with?
I have a bunch of 120 Etips I'm trying to work up a load for but RL26 seems like a bad match for this rifle and bullet. Hitting pressure at a pathetic 2800fps while the Creed will shoot these same pills over 3K.

I don't have solid numbers. But I believe I'm nearLY .080" off the lands when set to 2.9545" OAL.

I'm a believer in jumping bullets. I'd been reluctant for a time and then read Berger's website regarding the practice and gave their process a try. Here's the link:

The Bottom line for me was that jumping certain types of bullets produces amazing results. In the case of H1000 and Berger 140 gr VLDs, I've shot the best 5 shot groups of my life utilizing the process Berger recommends. I've also put Berger's recommendation to work regarding other bullets (and other cartridges I've got) and have had very similar results.

Keep experimenting (in a responsible and safe manner) and you'll see your group sizes get smaller and smaller!
