6.5 PRC Build

There is only a tiny difference in average velocity between the two cartridges, as some here have noted, with the 6.5 PRC having that slight advantage.

So... the question you must ask is which cartridge is going to have the most availability in terms of case availability? And if you don't reload then which will have a better selection of factory ammo?

@Mudrunner-> Thou hast a very dim view of hunters' abilities. Howsomever I must say I would partially agree with thee. I would say not that "most" hunters have dismal abilities but that 50% lack the necessary shooting skills and knowledge.

I say knowledge B/C for long range shooting (beyond 300 yards/meters) you need to have the knowledge that the rifle you zeroed say, at 200 yards, at 2,000 ft. on a cool, clear day will shoot differently at 9,000 ft. on a warm breezy day. Knowledge of the environmental factors such as "station pressure", spin drift, humidity, pesky winds, etc. all affect bullet flight and P.O.I. These "long range hunters" who have little knowledge of ballistics never, ever will have a dope sheet taped to their stock. ("Duhhh, what's a dope sheet?")

What is your load? I have a 6.5-280 rcbs I am working up loads for, just different shoulder.
His gun is running 61.5 grains of RL26 with a fed215m 143eldx or 140 Bergers. We switched to the Eldx because we couldn't find any Bergers the last few weeks. Bergers were right at 3200 and the ELDx is 3190. 26 inch Bartlien sporter contour. Eldx like 10thousands jump and the Bergers like them right at the lands.

"50% lack the necessary shooting skills and knowledge", That's being GENEROUS, from what I see and hear at the range every week?!

If not handloading, I would not git one unless federal starts making it in there Premium gold medal line of ammo. Hornady match ammo has been very inconsistent for me.

Yaaaaaayuh! Evolve or become a victim of evolution.

Mud not all your points are bad here but the "hype" has been proven to be true at matches and hunts all over the country for the last decade.

The PRC will see it's share of success as well.

By partnering with gun manufacturers and designing a cartridge to their specs Hornady has gone from being a 2nd or 3rd tier company marketing reloading components to one of the most innovative leaders in the business and has created great success for the gun manufacturers smart enough to partner with them.

Creativity and innovation does wonders in an open minded people.

The PRC is not "better" than anything. Its new, its cool, if someone wants to build one, let them.

Nothing to argue about or prove here. Hell, if I just spent $5,000 on a 6.5-284, I'd dis the PRC too,

It always comes back to, "people love what THEY have". they aren't going to admit they F'ed up;)

That, right there.

In the end just build or buy what you want, a deer won't know the difference if being shot in the heart with 6.5-284 or 6.5 PRC, only you'll know the slight velocity difference in the two at the range.
I have 6 different 6.5mm Rifles
and really happy taking any one hunting or to the range, let's face it they're fun to shoot, minimal recoil and in most cases now a days very accurate.
I have both and love them both.

There's a lot of truth here. I never bought into the "magic" of the 6.5's until I got my first .260.

Now I have 3 of them, 1 .264wm, and the 6.5 LRM and shooting the Peregrine bullets with them all I have been convinced. There's nothing in N. America I'd be afraid to shoot with a 6.5 or even feel slightly undergunned as long as I have an accurate load with a bullet I can trust to perform 100% of the time.

hi guys,
I tried a search on the topic and couldn't find any threads so appreciate any guidance you can offer.

Long story short, I've been planning and saving for a 6.5-284 build and now wonder about a 6.5 PRC instead.

Thoughts?

Where should I go for latter if that is best path?

Thanks,

Jeff

I own both. Listen to Mudrunner. Unless your parents didn't punish you enough as a child, stick with the 6.5-284.
