Long range shooting skill is one thing hunting savy is where its really at ............having the skill to make the long shots helps when that really big bull or buck has you peged, but the real talent is being a woodsman who does not put himself into the position to have to make the long shots very often. Its knowing that when you have to make the long shots you can.
In timbered country I would guess that most of the Elk for Mule Deer hear or smell you and are long gone and you have no idea they were there. Thats were having the "hunting knowlege" is really whats important.
I hunted Deer for 15 years with an old patched roundball and black powder muzzle loader and it was all about hunting.
In the hands of a woodsman most any respectable caliber will work.
