44 mag Lever action itch

Whatever brand you decide, I highly recommend stainless over blued. A few seasons hunting & you "WILL" understand. Also if recoil is a problem, there is a simple fix called,"slip on recoil pad".

Thank you. Could you load the 45 any hotter?
Possibly, in say a T/C Contender or Ruger type rig maybe another gr of 296 powder. Wouldn't try it with some of the lever guns they're tryN here. Marlin probably pretty NukPruff but, no reason to use up it's safety factor margins. If had to go tuffR, there is the 454 Casull, that could handle a top high pressure Colt 45 loads.

While the 45 Colt in a very strong revolver or rifle and using Starline brass can perhaps "approach" the .44 Mag in performance (with very hot over-pressure loads), the 44 mag can do the same thing at standard designed working pressure and with standard factory loads. While Starline claims they have tested their 45 Colt brass to 44 mag pressure levels, for safety and other reasons, it is best not to routinely load to those levels. If that is desired, better to use a 454 Casull.

Both cartridges can handle the same range of bullet weights (usually from 200-300 grains in JHP hunting bullets), and the .44 Magnum's .429" bullet has better sectional density (for better penetration) in those bullet weights than the .452" bullet. There is also a better selection of .429" bullets for the handloader.

Don't need one, but really have an itch for a 44 Mag Lever-action rifle. They seem pretty hard to come by lately. From what I've read so far, my preference list in order would be 1) Henry-side gate- steel or model X, 2) Marlin/ Ruger, 3) Older Winchester, 4) Rossi. Has anyone owned, shot, handled or otherwise had the opportunity to compare these? I already reload for the cartridge, looking to expand the usage to easily carried rifle. Thanks in advance. Best regards, Jim
My preference would definately be #1 Chiappa 1892 Alaskan Takedown from Taylor's and Co. #2 Either the B92 from Browning or the 1894 from Marlin. Any of those three would make any 44mag lever gun best of the best list. I do prefer the 1892 to the 1894 personally but Marlin does stainless and that sways big with me (or it would be stuck at #3 on my list).

I disagree. In a modern firearm with brass designed for modern pressures as mentioned. The 454 isn't really anything but a long Long Colt. You could just trim 454 brass and load to the same pressures as the 454 and it would just be a 45+P. Pressure specs are somewhat arbitrary and relative to firearms more than cartridges.

I have the Rossi in a 24 inch 357. Slicked it up a little and put a spring kit in it. With a peep tang sight and a globe front it's a real shooter.
A side gate Henry in 44mag is on my want list. I really want the threaded barrel of the x model, but with a wood stock.
I had the same Rossi. Fun gun. I traded something for it. Had it about 5 yrs.. Shot well with 357 but no so well with 38 spcl.. I sold it before I moved. Wish I'd kept it. Have had a hankering for a lever rifle since. Years ago I had a pre 64 model 94 and an OLD win. mod. 73 in 44-40. I was given them for free with some other guns. I needed money after divorce for mortgage payment and sold them....

If I had the cash, I'd buy a model 90 460 S&W from Bighorn armory here in Cody. We have a few rifle makers here in Cody. Also GunWerks and Best of the West. I have a S&W 460 XVR and Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Cassul. I'd also like a Henry Big Boy side gate in 44 mag to go along with my Ruger Super Blackhawk.
Check out Bighorn Armory's Mod. 89 and 90 lever rifles. Becarful of drooling 😉 click on one bar showing top left for menu. PayPal scam alert blocking the rest of it 🙄
