300 Win Mag ELD-X load testing?

Re: 300 Win Mag ELD-X load testing

Just tried some Hornady 200 gr. ELD-X in my 24" Remington 700 Milspec 300WM/NF ATAC-R. 79gr Retumbo, Norma brass, Fed215M, 200gr ELD-X seated.020' off the lands. For 10 shots avg velocity 2890FPS, ES 11FPS(Lab Radar). This is the same load that I use with Berger 210Hunting VLD's and Berger 215's. Velocity, ES, POI, and group size is very similar for all these bullets in my rifle.

I pretty much read everything you write in regards to the .300 Win Mag because I have the EXACT same rifle as you and although no two rifles are the same, it certainly gets me in the ballpark. I've got some 210gr. Berger VLD hunting bullets loaded up sitting on top of 79grs. of Retumbo .010" and .020" off the lands I'm waiting to try out.

Good luck with your loadwork. The 308 Milspec(3) I have owned were chambered almost identically and optimized with the same load. It will be interesting to see if the same holds true for the 300WM. Let us know how you make out.

How have these loads worked for y'all??? I ordered some of the 200gr for my R700 Long Range. I plan on loading with RL22 and 4350. The 4350 with Amax 178gr shoots about .3" @100yrds right now so I'm hoping to get that with the 200grs.

also whats the fastest you guys are getting with the 200gr? I have the new Hornady book (had to upgrade from my 2010 version) and its saying RL22 is the max load I can utilize and it'll get me around 2900fps. Id like to get more to 2960 as thats what my 178gr are shooting at.

RL23 will get you close to 2960 and will not be as temperature sensitive as RL22.

Factory rem700sendero 300wm 26"
212eldX jump was .014"
77gr H1000

100meters measures exactly .5"

I have not experiemented with other seating depths

I'd use a slower burning powder like H1000 or RL 26 I easily get 2960 fps with my 200 gr ELD-X with 79 gr of H1000 and faster than that with 74 gr of RL 26.
I could get 3000+ fps with the RL26 but the accuracy is so good and I'm happy with the speed right where it is.

I like the accuracy of the ELD-X but I'm not so sure about the way the bullet tend to blow up and destroy animals. I'm probably going back to the Accubond as I like the way it stays together much better.

They certainly seem to be more fragile than a Accubond but at ranges over 500yds(which is what this forum is all about) they will expand nice and provide a superior BC compared to an Accubond. Your exactly right about the slower burning powders getting the velocity up for true usage of the 300wm case capacity. I have had good success with H1000

Can't seam to get the accuracy I am looking for with anything else I try other than 71.5 of 4831sc. That gets me 1/2MOA or better but no venocity. If I increase my charge on 4831sc it falls apart. I have tried:

Retumbo 77.5-79,
H1000 78-79 and
RL26 73.5-74.5

Best I can get from those loads was about 1moa. What should I be using for cases, I have tried hornady and WW super winchesters? Do I need to sort cases and or bullets? I have tried seating .020 down to .005 of the lands. I have Redding competition dies. And only neck sizing. Using .003 neck tension. Tried new hornady and once fired. Any ideas?

Bullet weight?

Give them more jump. I can shoot them as long as 3.605 " but I'm loading them to 3.50" C.O.A.L. The ELD-X bullets like quite a bit of jump, at least they do in my gun.

X2 on the jump

Do the Berger jump test. Start at .020 and try them in to .120"
I bet you find a node around .040 or .060. I shoot the 162gr in my 7rem w/ H1000 and I get sub .5moa at .040 out of a factory Tikka.

300 win mag 26 inch Brux, 212 eldx 77.5 grains H1000, average 2945, es 18, .195 moa. I shot as high as 78.5 but only picked up to 2959 and started to see some pressure. I will take it out to 600 tomorrow and see if it holds that accuracy.

Very nice! Do you know what your bullet jump is on that 212gr eldX load? I shot nearly the same load in my factory Sendero with 77gr H1000 and .014" jump(pic above)
