My old 270 winchester, winchester model 70 has seen better days and christmas this year is funding a rebarrel, (exterior is pitted beyond fixing and just plain bothers me). I am kind of trying to decide on a contour and I am not really sure where to start. The current rifle is a featherweight .270 model 70 and that barrel is definitely not enough for days when I want to sit and plink away at the range. I am leaning toward a bartlein barrel and wondering if anyone has suggestions for something that I can pack around for hunting season along with sit and shoot more than 3 rounds before my barrel is almost hot. THanks in advance!

I recently rebarreled a rifle with a #3 Bartlein contour.I really like it over the standard contour it had before.I had to sand the barrel channel a little to get it to fit and float, but it wasn't really all that much since the previous barrel was already floated. The #3 really makes the rifle feel solid with the extra weight. It's not too heavy,it just makes the rifle settle well when your making a shot.As for the chamber,I'd go with a 26" 30-06.You can really do some amazing things with the 30-06 with the powders we have today.I also like the wide variety of bullets and weights with the 30cal.
I think you nailed it.30-06 and a bartlein barrel problem solved

.270 is a great cartridge but really isn't a plinker. Find a gunsmith that you trust to do the rebarrel and from there any of the barrel makers have fine stuff these days. I would recommend getting a single point cut rifle barrel, for a .270 - it will most likely last a lifetime. When you get your project done pick out a heavy contour plinking rifle that likes shooting 20+ rounds without getting hot and shoot it like you stole it, save the .270 for your hunting days.
Amen - pick up say a Tikka 3x Lite in 6.5 Creedmoor - for around $600 and never look back.

Totally - for us old farts - the 30:06 can do anything needed in North America - save for a BIG Griz or even bigger Kodiak Brown. Stil could do that job - at a distance. :)

Yes sir and a low charge of 4064 or 4895 a lite bullet and it's now a plinking rifle kick it up to 168 game king a little more powder and a hunting we will go

Shot everything from rabbits to deer with my 270w, plinking is fine with a sporter weight barrel, yes it heats up but that hasn't overly bothered me during the past 25 years and it is still accurate. Mine is a Rem700 stainless, when I re-barrel it I will go 26", can always shorten later, at the moment 1:10 does just fine for my needs. Just thread it and run a brake when plinking.
