If you're not tied to the caliber and reload, there's tons of interesting cartridges to try with that bolt face.

With regards to contour, I would just caution you that you may need to get a new stock as well. Something setup for a featherweight with almost no shank on the barrel won't fit a bartlein #2b with a normal shank.

I have a 25" bartlein #3 with straight flutes on a 260 I hunt with. Its not too bad to carry and it doesn't have a problem firing 10 in a row on target

The heavier barrel contour will largely depend on your stock. If you are keeping the factory stock, most likely a 2B is gonna be all that will fit you may get away with a 3 but be careful. If you start taking too much material out of your stock forend things can go bad for ya. Are you looking to do a complete rebuild or just rebarrel in the same caliber?

I just had my my Montana rifle redone with a #3 Bartlien barrel it's a wee bit heavier than the #2 that was on it, I love it....it was a bit finicky but I got it shooting good now

My old 270 winchester, winchester model 70 has seen better days and christmas this year is funding a rebarrel, (exterior is pitted beyond fixing and just plain bothers me). I am kind of trying to decide on a contour and I am not really sure where to start. The current rifle is a featherweight .270 model 70 and that barrel is definitely not enough for days when I want to sit and plink away at the range. I am leaning toward a bartlein barrel and wondering if anyone has suggestions for something that I can pack around for hunting season along with sit and shoot more than 3 rounds before my barrel is almost hot. THanks in advance!

If you are keeping the factory stock then #3 is probably the biggest you can go, at least according to McMillans technical specs on their M70 featherweight replacement stock. I've noticed some featherweights have more meat on the forend than others. I am having my Super Grade rebarreled with a #3B and forend looks like it is going to be razor thin once it is opened up for the new barrel, definitely wouldn't have worked on my olde featherweight.

I would look at a faster twist rate, due the changing in bullets, and their requirements to shot properly. The others is increasing the barrel length to 26" for slower burning powders. Other than that barrel weight and increase of overall weight is something you will need to determine for yourself.

Great round. It will handle almost any task.
All the custom barrels are great these days.
With the kind of product that Hart is producing these days, it's a great value one stop shop. Send it to Hart, get a mid weight barrel you can carry and shoot from any position and you'll be thrilled with what you get back.

Bartlien is a good choice.So is a Shilen barrel.I like a Melonite barrel . I'd also flute it.Good Luck.I have both barrels and love it.However a 270 is rather large and rough to plink with.Too much recoil to enjoy plinking for me.

I'd echo the need to be careful about how much you can actually open up the barrel channel in the stock. Also, consider taking the opportunity to have it threaded and have a protective cap made. Adding a suppressor to a .270 really would make it an enjoyable plinking rifle. If you ever try it, you'll never go back.

Plink with what you like, I shoot rockchucks and coyotes with 340 wby, 375 ultra, and a .404 Jeffries it's called knowing your gun, though excessive power for all that shooting is good to practice pic is of rockChuck and 375 ultra

Whichever barrel manufacturer and contour you decide on, make sure you have the right twist to propel the high BC heavies. My .270 AI has 30" Lilja 1:8" 3G #6, propelling the 175 Matrix VLD at 2993 FPS (my current accuracy load) with H4831SC.

I can't imagine me carrying a 30in barrel on a hunt. Probably to heavy for me. Don't get me wrong I shoot a 31in barrel in 308 with 185gr burgers at 1000 yard's. For hunting I prefer a 22in barrel lightweight. I'm getting old too fast lol.

My Winchester extreme weather is getting redone as we speak here in Colorado with S3 in Loveland.
My original barrel lasted almost 10 years of moderate shooting and reloads. Love the 270 and will go back with a 270 since I have so many bullets and brass available. Going with a 26" krieger in 1-8 to stabilize the 165s, I can't wait to get her back and start loading again.
