240gr. Mk seating in 300WSM?

Here are some the specs of the different bullets we have been talking about.

.702 between 2150 and 1800 fps
.685 @ 1800 fps and below

This is why I wanted to shoot the Matchkings! BUT, if I can't get enough velocity I might just have to deal with it.:( I am not trying to put down the A-MAX or Berger bullets they are incredible, I just wanted to shoot the biggest highest BC. bullet capable. I hope you guys understand.:D
It sucks that more people aren't using the 240gr. MK's in the 300wsm so I could know how they handle in that case.

tacticalhits,i have a 300wm savage 110fp.1-10"twist.couldnt get the 240's to work in my rifle.probably the 10" twist.i have seen 10"twist 300 weatherby and rum shoot them quite well.they can shoot them a little faster than the 300 wm/wsm.i'm going to jump on the band wagon with everyone else with the 200-210 grain area.208 amax is awesome,my brother shot a smallish 8 point at 600 yards with these out of his 300wm.bang/flop!2"exit hole.these are the bullets i've been working with. bc-.640.sierra matchking 200-.565bc,200 nosler accubond .588bc.210 berger i think in the .630's.all good choices.just start shooting them and see.i can see you are fairly new here.welcome, lots of good info here.to get good at 1000 yards takes lots of practice, practice, practice.hang around here, listen learn and apply what the "old timers"of this sport pass on and you and i will be fine.notice i said "i" i am no expert either, thats why i frequent this site.jason ps good luck with the wsm!

I have loaded the 240SMK in my 300wm,and I just couldn't get it to shoot fast enough to make it worth my while.I found by running the numbers on my exbal, the 208 Amax was the best as far as ballistics are concerned(actually any 210gr. with comparable b.c.'s).I ran several different bullets and figured in avarage velocities based on Hodgons website, and the 210gr. bullet seemed to be the best(comparing trajectory and energy).Just my .02

GG, I have used VV-N550 and I do have experience with it. All I did was recommend a powder I thought might help the guy push the 210grn bullet at a faster velocity. GoodGrouper knows everything just listen to him, he's the expert.

IMO, the 300 WSM peaks out with the 210s and I have shot them to 1680 yards.

No need for the 240, plus to avoid pushing them back in the case, you are going to have to order a special reamer to seat them out.

I have not run the numbers, but I do not think you will gain anything, and my bet is you will lose.

The guys running the 240s are using much bigger cases and using them as their "wind" guns.

I'd say he knows a hell of lot more than you do. Want to match resumes with him?

Like I said, GG is the expert and he knows way more than I do when it comes to rifles and BC. That's why I told Tactical to listen to him. What else would you like me to say. All I did was try to make a recommendation to another poster and know I am being attacked for that. I thought Tactical might like to know about this powder.

It looks like I'll be using 210gr. bullets. I can't argue when everyone is saying to do so!:D Is the twist rate the same for the 208gr. A-MAX and the 210gr. Berger? Also, what kind of velocity will I be getting with these bullets in a 30inch barrel? I will be using norma brass, what powder, caps, etc should I use? Thanks guys you have been very helpful!

Tactical, with a 30" barrel and using Norma brass, you should be able to push the 210grn bullets at 2900 to 3000fps. The Norma brass will allow you to use higher pressure loads safely. The Norma 300 WSM brass is excellent and very consistant. 1000 yard bench rest shooters are reporting these velocities with the 300 WSM and 30" barrels.

Like I said try the N550 powder, I 've used it in some of my prior rifles and it worked very well. It will give you more velocity with less pressure. However, GoodGrouper has had more experience with it and is reporting throat erosion. I would touch base with him to get more info, however, I would still try it out and if you use it, just clean more than you would with other powders.

I would use Federal 215M Primers. You might want to put some on back order because you can't find any right now. I was lucky because someone gave me a brick or I would have been SOL.

Other powders I would try would be Viht N-160 and N-165, Reloader 19, H4350 AND H4831. I have received excellent results with Viht. powder. It is very consistant and clean, however, it is more expensive and hard to find sometimes. I know you can get Vihtavuori Powder at Sinclair, and I think MidwayUSA.com. It's worth the extra $$$. Good luck with your 300 WSM, it's a great round and with the 210grn bullets, it will be deadly out to 1500+ yards.

Actually I find that vv560 gives better velocities in the 300 wsm with bullets heavier than 168s. It would probably give better velocities with lighter bullets if you could get enough of it in the case. I think 550 would be a little fast to give you best velocities with heavier bullets and longer barrels.
As far as 560 being a throat eater I would probably say goodgrouper is right. But think maybe he has an extreme example. I have used 560 for about 1500 rounds in a 6x47 and have not had a problem...yet. The barrel already had nearly one thousand rounds down range before I switched from vv160. The throat looks ugly, but it looked ugly before the switch. My new 6x47 only has about 500 rounds down it and through a borescope it looks better than my first 6x47 did with a similar number of rounds using non high energy powder. I shoot vv560 in 300WSM, 300WM, 7WSM, 243AI, 6x47, 22-6.5x47, 30-06AI and probably something else I cant recall. If there is anyway I can stuff enough of it in the case to get the velocity I want it is my go to powder. I have not seen any extreme wear, but most of these are hunting guns and wont see three or four hundred rounds a year.

GG, I don't know what you want me to alaborate on. You know way more about this stuff than I do and you have had way more experience with experimentation, ect. You run a shooting school and read about this stuff probably all day long. So what ever you say, I wont dispute it. However, when I had my 6.5x284, I got more velocity with N550 and I did not see any pressure increases with it. I received about 75fps more with the same bullet using this powder. I was orignally shooting a 139grn Lapua Scenar at 3010fps with H4350. When I switched to N550, my velocity went to 3085fps. Like I said, I did not see any pressure problems.

I sold that rifle when I had only about 400 rounds down the barrel, so I never got to see if it effected the throat. I am sure for the extra velocity you receive, you're probably going to see some increased throat erosion and barrel ware. I push my rifles harder and faster, because I am not worried about buying another barrel and having the gunsmith re-chamber, ect. However, for the guy who is trying to make his barrel last as long as possible, than I would probably use a different powder, ect. But there should be no dispute over the increased velocity potential with N550. It will improve your velocity, and I know it would help TacticalHits push the 210grn Bullets at 3000+fps out of his rifle.

Don't paint yourself in the corner

I personally think, that the 240SMK is too heavy for the .300WSM case capacity to achieve the velocity needed. In this respect the lighter (190/200/208/210) bullets are a better option. For long range shooting you need both, a high velocity as well as a high BC.
