I've shot a pile of wolves with a 223 and stopped using it due to their terrible terminal performance. No outfitters here recommend them for paying clients. If you can't handle the recoil of a 243, 6 gt or a 6.5 creedmoor lord help you
Or an excellent .257 somewhere in the middle.
Agreed!

Like has been harped upon everywhere on this site, with smaller calibers shot placement is CRITICAL. Inside of 400 yards, the .223 Remington is more capable than people want to believe however bullet selection, shooting environment, etc are of paramount importance to make that a reality, and not a severe disappointment. If the shooter and their knowledge aren't up to the task then neither is the round.

If .224 is great for medium-large game as suggested here, what is .264-.308 good for? Cape Buff? Grizz?
Bell shot over 1,000 elephants with a 275 rigby(7x57 Mauser), so probably yeah a 308 would be fine for anything.

I've read it.
He also seated bullets backward for penetration, out of necessity.
We have better choices today for such applications and don't have to hunt ivory for a living here in beautiful crime free Mississippi.
For some reason I don't necessarily feel lucky though.?

How many have you shot though?

It's like using Jerry Miculek to support individual choices on handguns. Lots of parameters being ignored to make a point.
This is true. Not everyone has the same parameters when it come to tools to do a job. Just because your beliefs are challenged by others choices and results doesn't make your beliefs true or correct.
