.17 HMR for Coyote??

17hmr is more capable than a lot of folks think. My CZ 452 shoots the 20 grain xtps into dime sized groups at well over the published velocity, somewhere around 2620 if I remember. Inside 100 yards it hammers. I've got relatives that only carry a 17 and a shotgun for coyotes and don't see many get away.
Personally I carry a 22 nosler in the pickup, you can take out a whole pack pretty easily on wheat pasture. If the last dogs get further out I'll walk my shots in until I connect or run out of rounds. Best I've done was 3 coyotes at once, with the last being 463 yards on a dead sprint. That one took 6 rounds😂.

As one who's killed quite a few coyotes , I personally wouldn't use that round, unless i was an expert shot and could hit a golf ball at 200 yards every time. Only then would I opt for that round. If you can do this then go for it ,head shots.
If that`s at 100 yards with 17hmr, that`s good shootin`, Tex!

It is but I sold the hmr to a guy here and got the CZ 17 hornet never looked back anything I drew down on was drt with the hmr but my shooting is fairly good.,but the hornet caught my eye and I moved the hmr on. Had a couple dozen coyotes and gh's with it.Yotes usually head shots out to 200, below 200 yards 1/4 inch from dead center.

I shot two coyotes on broadside shots, one at 10 yards and the other around 25 yards. I found one 110 yards away, the other was never found, 20g Bullets.

Since then, other bullets have been tried.

I went back to a 22 Magnum, 40g Winchester Hp, and absolutely no problem with coyotes and lions.

17 hmr was a flash in the pan ,coyotes head shots ,gh's out to 100 max and expect many crawl offs, for less than stellar marksman. Now 17 hornet I shoot most of my ghs right at their den holes ,and 99% are DRT,the other 15 slide in the hole on reflex.

Knowing your limitations, your firearms limitations and the limitation of your cartridge are the first key components of clean kills. Learning where to place your shots and being able to place your shots there is of upmost importance. Sadly, I have taken several coyotes, and other animals, that were carrying other people's bullets or with severe wounds, legs missing, broken and flopping, ect. . And it's not only firearms, snares and foothold traps we need to do things to our best abilities and continue to learn and evolve.

I really like .17s for foxes and bobcats. They come in closer and give me more time typically and I have time to shoot them exactly where I want. Coyotes are usually moving and they don't stop long. I shoot .223, .22-250 and .243 for them and honestly I kinda feel like even a .223 can be too small. Where I hunt if they run you are going to have to go into really bad, really thick thorns and cactus to find them. I get a few here and there that take a great hit from a .223 and run off far enough to be a pain in the rear to recover. I can't imagine how many would run off with a .17. I wouldn't pass a close shot on a coyote with a 17 but I wouldn't set out to hunt them with one either.
